WHY IT MATTERS

Why this project exists

nullDC-rust is a modern reimplementation/rewrite of the nullDC Dreamcast emulator codebase, undertaken to consolidate decades of Dreamcast emulation work and to pursue accuracy and maintainability using Rust.

BEST FOR

What it does best

Provides a single-repo, actively developed Rust-based Dreamcast emulator implementation with source, build artifacts, and developer-facing documentation. It aims for architectural clarity and accuracy rather than shipping legacy binary builds with bundled firmware.

The people behind nullDC-rust

History and status

nullDC (the original) is a long-running Dreamcast emulator project; skmp (the original author of nullDC and related Dreamcast emulator work) has consolidated R&D into a modern rewrite under nullDC-rust. The repository shows active development, a multi-hundred-commit history, an MIT license, and published build artifacts and documentation on nulldc.emudev.org. The project is open-source and under active maintenance from the repository owner as of the repository metadata and project website.

What nullDC-rust supports

  • Sega Dreamcast (emulation target)
  • Source builds for host platforms supported by Rust (see project repo for exact targets and prebuilt artifacts)
  • Developer tools and a web-based devtools interface (documentation and build artifacts on nulldc.emudev.org)
  • No commercial game ROMs, Dreamcast BIOS, firmware, or keys are included with the project.

nullDC-rust setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide covers the practical steps to obtain, build, and run nullDC-rust from the official project sources. It assumes basic familiarity with command-line development tooling and that you will supply any required Dreamcast BIOS or game images separately and legally.

  1. 1) Get the source or releases: Visit the official GitHub repository (skmp/nullDC-rust) to clone the source: git clone https://github.com/skmp/nullDC-rust.git. For prebuilt artifacts check the repository Releases page or the nulldc.emudev.org builds/devtools pages. Verify any downloaded binaries against the release notes and checksums provided by the project (if available).
  2. 2) Prepare your build environment: nullDC-rust is written in Rust and published under an MIT license. Install a recent Rust toolchain (rustup, cargo, rustc) matching the toolchain versions recommended in the repo (see tool-versions.txt or the project README). Install any platform-specific development packages the repo lists (for example system libraries for audio, windowing or graphics backends) — consult the repository README for exact dependencies before proceeding.
  3. 3) Build from source: From the repository root use cargo to build. Typical commands are cargo build –release for an optimized build or cargo run for development runs. The repository contains Cargo.toml and workspace crates; follow any workspace or crate-specific instructions in the README or top-level build notes. If the project provides CI artifacts or a published binary on the Releases page you can use those instead of building locally.
  4. 4) Obtain required Dreamcast firmware or game images separately: nullDC-rust does not bundle commercial game images, BIOS, or firmware. If an emulated title or system component requires a Dreamcast BIOS or firmware you must obtain those files yourself and only use copies you legally own. The project documentation or runtime logs will indicate any required BIOS filenames or placement conventions — check the repo docs and nulldc.emudev.org devtools pages for details.
  5. 5) Configure runtime options and controllers: After building or downloading a release, start the emulator and consult the emulator's configuration files or UI for input mapping, controller settings, and video/audio backends. If the project exposes config files in a config directory or command-line flags, use those to set controller mapping, renderscale, and audio backend. For controller passthrough, modern operating-system gamepad drivers should work; consult the project's issues or docs for any platform-specific notes.
  6. 6) Debugging and devtools: nullDC-rust provides developer-facing tooling and documentation on nulldc.emudev.org (devtools and builds pages). If you encounter crashes or missing features, gather logs, specify the exact commit or release you used, and open an issue on the GitHub repository — include platform, Rust toolchain version, and build logs as requested by the maintainers.
  7. 7) Updating and contribution: To update, pull the latest commits from the upstream repository and rebuild. The project uses an open-source workflow on GitHub; read the CONTRIBUTING or README to learn how to file issues, open pull requests, or reproduce test cases. Respect licensing and attribution when reusing code.

Software reminder: Do not use archived or downloaded Dreamcast BIOS, firmware, or commercial game images unless you legally own them; nullDC-rust does not include or provide these files.
