MULTI SYSTEM EMULATOR
RALibretro
RALibretro is an open-source multi-emulator implementation used by the RetroAchievements project to run many libretro cores (and some standalone emulators) with built-in RetroAchievements integration and developer tools for creating and testing achievement sets.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why RALibretro exists
RALibretro was created and is maintained by the RetroAchievements project to provide a consistent, controllable emulator environment for achievement development and testing. It exposes memory viewers, achievement debugging tools, and RA integration features so achievement authors can inspect memory, test triggers, and generate RA-compatible hashes without relying on many different emulator builds.
BEST FOR
Best use-cases
Developing, testing, and debugging RetroAchievements sets; viewing game memory and save-state data for discovery of achievement conditions; running games with RetroAchievements support where a supported libretro core is available.
The people behind RALibretro
History and current status
The RALibretro project is hosted and developed by the RetroAchievements organization on GitHub. The repository describes RALibretro as a multi-emulator used to develop RetroAchievements and the RetroAchievements documentation references RALibretro as a primary development environment and a supported emulator for achievement-enabled play. The project is actively maintained (issues and releases are present in the repository) and is distributed from its official GitHub repository and release pages. RALibretro is used alongside libretro cores and, where applicable, some standalone emulators; RetroAchievements documentation and developer guides show RALibretro as the recommended environment for creating and verifying achievement logic.
What RALibretro supports
- Multiple systems via libretro cores (the RetroAchievements documentation refers to 40+ supported systems when using supported cores and setups)
- Libretro cores (works with many libretro/libretro-core binaries)
- Standalone RA-specific builds where available
- Achievement development tools: memory viewer, save/load, achievement inspector

Setup note: Below are practical, emulator-specific setup steps for using RALibretro to play games with RetroAchievements and to develop achievement sets. Follow the official repo and RetroAchievements developer documentation for the most up-to-date requirements and download artifacts.
- 1) Get the official release or source: Visit the official GitHub repository and the releases page to download prebuilt binaries or source. If a prebuilt release exists for your platform, download that archive. If you prefer to build from source, clone the repository (the repo is the authoritative source for code and build instructions).
- 2) Required RA integration components: RetroAchievements requires the RA integration layer used by RALibretro. The RetroAchievements documentation references RA_Integration binaries used by several setups; the RALibretro repo and RA developer docs show where integration files and additional assets live. Ensure you have the RA integration files that match the RALibretro build (32- vs 64-bit, platform). Do not expect commercial BIOS or copyrighted game files to be included.
- 3) Install libretro cores or use supported standalone emulators: RALibretro runs libretro cores to emulate individual systems. Acquire the specific libretro core binaries (for example, Genesis Plus GX, Beetle PSX, mGBA, Gambatte, etc.) compatible with the version of RALibretro you are using. Place cores where RALibretro expects cores (the repository or release notes describe the core directory layout). Some systems may be provided by RA-maintained standalone builds; check release notes for details on which emulators are bundled.
- 4) Configure RALibretro for RetroAchievements: Open RALibretro (or the provided frontend) and enter your RetroAchievements username and API token if required by the build (developer docs and setup guides explain authentication). Enable the RetroAchievements/RA integration option in RALibretro’s settings so that the achievements system is active when loading games. Consult the RetroAchievements setup guide for exact UI locations and configuration keys as these may differ between releases.
- 5) Load a core and a game ROM (or image): Use the emulator UI to load a libretro core and then load the matching ROM/BIOS image for the target game. RALibretro will check the game’s checksum/hash against the RetroAchievements database to determine if achievements are available. If you are developing achievements, use the memory viewer and finder tools inside RALibretro to locate addresses and test conditions.
- 6) Using developer tools inside RALibretro: RALibretro exposes memory inspection, live memory search, save-state management, and achievement debugging tools used by achievement authors. Use the memory viewer to add notes for addresses, test triggers frame-by-frame, and save snapshot states. The RetroAchievements developer documentation provides examples using RALibretro with specific cores.
- 7) Troubleshooting and compatibility: If a core behaves differently in RALibretro vs another frontend (for example RetroArch), consult the RALibretro repo issues page and the RetroAchievements compatibility page. Some cores or games may have limitations; the RetroAchievements documentation lists cores known to be supported or problematic for certain achievements. Keep RALibretro updated to the latest release when using new feature sets (e.g., Multiset/subset features).
- 8) Building from source (high-level): If building RALibretro from source, clone the official repository and follow the repository's README/build instructions. Use the same architecture (x86_64 vs x86) and toolchain noted by the repo. When building, ensure the RA integration component referenced by the docs is available to link or place beside the built binary. For platform-specific build flags and dependencies, follow the repository's build instructions and the included documentation.
Software reminder: RALibretro does not include commercial games, firmware/BIOS files, or copyrighted ROMs. Acquire those files separately and legally. Follow the official repository and RetroAchievements documentation for exact file placement and build instructions.
