WHY IT MATTERS

Why TetaNES matters

TetaNES is a modern Rust-based NES implementation that focuses on portability (desktop + WASM) and active development. It offers a contemporary codebase and integration with modern graphics backends via wgpu, making it attractive for users who want a current-language implementation and web builds.

BEST FOR

Notable strengths

Cross-platform binaries and releases (including AppImage/.deb/.dmg/installer), a cargo-installable workflow, a WebAssembly build target for browser use, and an actively maintained repository with feature and roadmap documentation.

The people behind tetanes

History and status

TetaNES began as a personal project and evolved into a public open-source NES emulator implemented in Rust. The project repository and README describe it as actively developed and feature-richer over time; the project publishes releases and a public roadmap, and it is listed among community emulator resources. Development produces periodic releases (for example v0.16.0 in recent months) and documentation for desktop and web builds. The project is available under permissive open-source licensing in its GitHub repository.

What tetanes supports

  • Nintendo Entertainment System / Famicom (ROM images required)
  • Windows (installer/binary)
  • macOS (app bundle / Homebrew formula)
  • Linux (AppImage, .deb, tar.gz)
  • Web (WebAssembly build for browsers)

tetanes setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide shows how to get TetaNES running on common platforms and how to prepare NES ROMs. It focuses on verified, practical steps based on the project's repository and release notes rather than generic emulator instructions.

  1. Obtain the official release (recommended): Open the project's GitHub Releases page and download the asset that matches your platform (Windows installer, macOS .dmg, Linux .deb or AppImage). Verify the release version and read the Release notes for platform-specific requirements. Use the downloaded installer or package manager instructions provided on the release asset.
  2. Linux: install from .deb / AppImage: For Debian/Ubuntu download the tetanes .deb from Releases and install with: sudo apt install ./tetanes-<version>-amd64.deb. For other distributions, download the AppImage, make it executable (chmod +x tetanes-<version>.AppImage) and run it. Some releases also include a tar.gz containing the tetanes binary which can be placed in a directory on your PATH. Ensure system dependencies described in the repository (for example ALSA and GTK3 where noted) are installed on Linux.
  3. macOS: use the app bundle or Homebrew: Download the .dmg for macOS from the Releases page and install the app bundle. Alternatively, the project provides a Homebrew formula; follow the README instructions (brew install lukexor/formulae/tetanes) if you prefer Homebrew-managed installs. Confirm the build target matches your CPU (arm64 vs x86_64) and use the matching .dmg if provided.
  4. Windows: run the installer and prerequisites: Download the Windows installer from Releases and run it. If the installer reports a missing runtime (e.g., vcruntime DLL), install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable as directed in the repository's README or release notes. After installation, launch the application from the Start Menu or installation folder.
  5. Build from source with cargo (developers/users who want latest): Install Rust toolchain (rustup) and cargo. Clone the repository and build: git clone https://github.com/lukexor/tetanes.git cd tetanes cargo build –release. Optionally install with cargo install tetanes to place the binary in your cargo bin folder. For WASM/web builds follow the project's web documentation and build steps described in the repo/docs for generating the WebAssembly target and hosting it.
  6. Browser / WebAssembly build: The project documents a web target (TetaNES Web). Follow the project's web documentation to produce a WASM build or use any published web demo linked from the repository. The web build requires building the Rust project to target wasm32-unknown-unknown and using the provided frontend assets; see the project's web docs for exact commands.
  7. Loading games and formats: TetaNES requires NES ROM images (user-provided). Use the emulator's File/Open or drag-and-drop to load supported ROM files (typical .nes binaries). The project README and documentation list supported mappers and formats; consult them if you encounter cartridge mapper compatibility issues.
  8. Controller and input setup: TetaNES supports keyboard and gamepad input. The repository mentions SDL-compatible mappings and links to controller database resources; configure input through the emulator settings. If a controller mapping database is referenced in the README, follow that link to obtain mappings for your controller.

Software reminder: TetaNES does not include commercial game ROMs, BIOS/firmware, or copyrighted material. You must provide your own legally obtained NES ROM images and any firmware required by specific hardware. Follow local laws regarding ROM ownership and use.
