Arcade
Arcade refers to coin-operated video game hardware and venues. Games were often built around short sessions and specialized controls.

A player stepping up to a Pac-Man cabinet in 1980 faced a glowing maze and a joystick that responded instantly to every twitch. The cabinet’s CRT display and simple, clicky controls left no room for lag or confusion, each corner was a test of reflex and planning, with the hardware tuned for clarity and speed. The game’s dedicated cabinet meant everything, from the art on the sides to the feel of the joystick, was built to draw in quarters and keep the action moving. The experience was inseparable from the machine itself, with the hardware’s reliability and focus shaping the way players approached each round.
The hardware in practice
Arcade hardware was never one-size-fits-all. Out Run, for example, transformed the arcade visit by putting players in a molded seat with a steering wheel and pedals, letting them feel every curve of the road. This wasn’t just a video game, it was a physical event, with the cabinet’s design making the fantasy tactile. Rhythm games later added their own twist, using custom controls like dance pads or drum kits to pull players off the sidelines and into the spotlight. Each specialized attraction required its own engineering, from force feedback in racing games to the precise sensors in light gun shooters.
Games and ownership
Operators faced a different challenge: keeping cabinets fresh without breaking the bank. Interchangeable boards let them swap out games in a single shell, stretching the life of their investment and letting the arcade floor evolve with new trends. But these upgrades had limits, controls and displays often couldn’t match the demands of every new title, so some experiences always needed a dedicated setup. The arcade’s ever-changing mix of hardware and software made every visit unpredictable, with each machine’s quirks shaping the games people remembered.
