In case you missed it: DOS Sports Games That Refused to Play Straight
This batch of DOS-era sports finds runs from serious court craft to games that happily put lasers, hovercraft, and hostile obstacles in the way of a clean score.
1994Pool+
In hazard-filled pool, eighteen cue-ball settings cover English, follow, draw, center-ball hits, and vector or point selection. A standard rectangle sits beside elongated hexagonal, parallelogram, triangular, and hexagonal tables, while fireballs, bombs, UFOs, dragons, helicopters, and cheerleaders can destroy the cue ball.
3 Point Basketball
In three-point contest, mouse-controlled angle and power govern shots from around the arc, with practice and single-elimination tournament modes on offer. Jordy Michales, Mystic Johnson, and Larry Fowl make a fine starting point for comparing the era’s fondness for basketball parody names.
3-D TableSports
In tabletop triple bill, Foosball uses keyboard and mouse control for rods, with beginner mode switching to the pole nearest the ball. Slamhockey allows a Battle Mode crossing of the halfway line, while Power Hoops combines a charge gauge with up to eight balls and 35 scoring holes.
3D Ball Blaster
In hovercraft ball game, two hovercraft chase five points around shifting arenas with moving goals. Long-range goals are worth two points, and earned credits can go toward shields, ball-seizing blasters, mines, or other match equipment.
3DWorld
In TunnelVISION double feature, Voyageur IV has three ships defending Earth from incoming asteroids before a hyperspace trip, asteroid-belt dodge, and spare-parts search. Its companion ping-pong match traps the ball inside a walled table, with win margins adjustable to 5, 10, or 15 points.
4D Sports Tennis
In polygon tennis court, timing and placement govern serves, volleys, and lobs, with practice drills alongside career play and same-PC two-player matches. Fixed, free-roaming, and racket-following first-person cameras are joined by replay controls for pausing, rewinding, and changing perspective.
Action Soccer
In no-offside football, 16 international teams have ratings for speed, strength, shot power, accuracy, stamina, and skill, without offsides or fatigue management. Friendly, UBI-Cup, Championship, and Tournament modes can be played in sun, night, rain, or snow, with 2D overview and 3D isometric views.
Actua Soccer: Club Edition
In Premiership polygon football, the 20 English Premiership clubs and their 1996–97 squads frame fast matches with passing, shooting, tackling, and switchable camera angles. It would be interesting to put its close-up player view beside the broader tactical angle and see which one makes a better match.
adidas Power Soccer
In Predator Shot football, Simulation and Arcade modes split the game between a more measured match and special-move spectacle. Four camera views and English, German, or French commentary round out a football game built around the Predator Shot.
Alien Olympics
In alien athletics meet, eight competitors tackle 15 events including the 50 Qrbit Dash, Laser Leaping, Big Bounce, Laser Skeet, Toxophilly, Survival, and Jetpack Tag. Mr. Mune’s many legs are tied to shooting strength, while other events invite a direct comparison of which alien best fits a friend’s preferred discipline.
Which of these would you bring to a keyboard-sharing session: the cue-ball hazards, the alien event marathon, or the walled ping-pong table?
“Yes,there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on.”
