Vroom: Data Disk

Vroom: Data Disk is a straightforward shot of extra mileage for an existing Formula 1 racer. Its six new Grand Prix circuits move the competition through Montreal, Monza, Hockenheim, Estoril, São Paulo, and Mexico City, giving committed Vroom players fresh courses rather than changing the game beneath them.

The Atari ST edition gets the more consequential extra: joystick control in competition mode. That is a welcome quality-of-life addition if you prefer a stick to the original control approach, while Amiga owners are chiefly buying this for the circuit selection.

Gameplay

The first thing you notice about Vroom: Data Disk is its plainspoken purpose: it gives you six more Grand Prix circuits to learn, race, and revisit. There is no attempt to turn Vroom into a different kind of racer. Instead, the disc asks whether you still enjoy the core chase for cleaner laps and stronger competition, then supplies more places to pursue it.

The circuit roster has a satisfying international spread. Montreal, Monza, Hockenheimring, Estoril, São Paulo, and Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez give the expansion the feeling of a meaningful second batch of Grand Prix stops rather than a token bonus track or two. If the original game already had you replaying events to improve your performance, six additions is enough to renew that habit.

Atari ST owners get a practical reason to pay attention beyond the new locations: competition mode can use a joystick. That may be the deciding detail for anyone who finds joystick racing more natural. It does not alter the challenge itself, but a preferred control method can make the difference between wanting one more attempt and putting the game away.

Graphics

The new circuits are identified by real-world Grand Prix locations, from Monza in Italy to Montreal in Canada and Mexico City in Mexico. The data disk’s visual contribution is therefore new racing environments within Vroom’s established look, rather than a wholesale graphical overhaul.

Story

There is no dramatic detour here; the momentum comes from the racing calendar and the next circuit waiting to be mastered. That suits a Formula 1 add-on. You are not buying it for characters or plot turns, but for another run at a demanding course.

The named locations give your progress a small sense of travel, even when the real motivation is competitive. Moving from Canada to Italy, Germany, Portugal, Brazil, and Mexico gives the added events more flavor than a set of anonymous layouts would have.

That stripped-back approach works because the disc stays focused. Vroom: Data Disk treats the championship setting as enough of a frame and lets your own results provide the drama: a better run, a cleaner race, or finally handling a circuit that previously got the better of you.

Overall Experience

Vroom: Data Disk is a sensible expansion rather than an essential reinvention. Six circuits is a worthwhile amount of new material if Vroom is already in your regular rotation, and the locations chosen make the pack feel grounded in a recognizable Grand Prix itinerary.

Its limitation is also its honesty: this is for someone who wants more Vroom. If the original racing does not hold your interest, extra tracks will not change your mind. If it does, fresh circuits are exactly the sort of addition that can make you return with renewed patience.

The Atari ST version earns a slight edge thanks to joystick support in competition mode, a welcome option with immediate day-to-day value. Amiga owners still get the full six-circuit expansion, but ST racers who have wanted that control choice have the clearest reason to pick up the disc. As an add-on, it is a solid, focused extension of its parent game.
