Der Schuh des Manitu

Der Schuh des Manitu starts with a pleasantly silly rescue race: you shuffle between stakes, pull at ropes, fire at troublemakers, and try not to let the clock or a passing coyote ruin the attempt. The movie voices and music give the simple action a bit of personality, especially if you already know Abahachi and Ranger from Bullyparade.

That initial joke wears thin because every stage leans on the same increasingly hectic routine. Constant respawns, enemies that undo your work, and instant stake resets from coyotes make success feel more like surviving interference than mastering a varied action game. It is a brief novelty for fans, but not much more.

Gameplay

The first few minutes have an easy, arcade-like hook. You move left and right between captured friends, tug at their ropes, and shoot anything trying to interrupt the rescue. It is a clean goal with immediate pressure: clear every stake before the countdown expires.

The trouble is that the opposition is designed to keep you busy rather than give you many interesting choices. Shoshones can pull ropes back or throw rocks, Santa Maria’s outlaws shoot, and folding chairs charge straight at you. You are constantly switching from rescue work to damage control, which can be funny in short bursts but becomes exhausting once enemies keep returning.

Coyotes are the harshest nuisance. When one bites through a rope, that stake has to be started over, so a run can collapse after a small lapse in attention. Later stages add more stakes and faster respawns, raising the tension, but they mostly intensify the same routine instead of changing it. If you enjoy chasing a high-pressure time limit, there is a little stubborn satisfaction in clearing a stage; otherwise, the repetition arrives quickly.

Graphics

The game uses 3D scenes with characters drawn as cardboard-like figures, a fittingly cheap-and-cheerful look for this broad comedy. Comic-style backgrounds are sparse, so most of what you see is the rescue area, the stakes, and the stream of attackers closing in.

Story

There is barely a story to carry you between rounds, but the setup is direct: Abahachi or Ranger must save their friends from the Shoshones before time runs out. That is enough to justify the frantic rope-pulling, even if it never becomes more than a frame for the minigame.

The stronger connection is to the film and the Bullyparade characters. Familiar voices, babble samples, and music supply much of the joke, turning failures and interruptions into part of the licensed comedy rather than plain arcade frustration.

If you do not already have affection for this cast and its style of humor, the story will not win you over. The rescue premise is functional, not a reason to keep going once the central challenge has worn out its welcome.

Overall Experience

Der Schuh des Manitu feels like an elongated bonus game that escaped onto its own disc. Its best moments come when the timer is low, several enemies are demanding attention, and you just manage to free the final captive.

Unfortunately, it asks you to replay that same scramble with more congestion rather than richer ideas. The rising stake count and respawn rate create difficulty, but not much variety, and the coyote penalty can turn a tense run into a sour one.

Give it a look if you are a devoted fan of the movie, Abahachi, and Ranger, or if you have a fondness for small, odd licensed games from this era. Everyone else will likely get the joke early and run out of reasons to keep untangling ropes.
