Watchmen: The End Is Nigh – Part 2

Watchmen: The End Is Nigh – Part 2 casts you as Rorschach or Nite Owl II, tearing through thugs in search of a missing girl. The brawling has the blunt, mean streak you want from these characters, especially when Rorschach grabs a nearby weapon and turns a crowded room into a mess.

It is also a very slight follow-up. Three new stages and a few new enemy types do not do much to freshen a formula carried over intact from Part 1. Local co-op and the strong lead performances give it some life, but this is a decent extra chapter for Watchmen fans, not a brawler with much reason to linger.

Gameplay

The first few fights deliver the simple fantasy this spin-off promises: pick Rorschach or Nite Owl II, walk into a hostile space, and start knocking people down. Combat is built around attacks and combos against waves of street toughs, with improvised weapons adding a welcome bit of brutality. A baseball bat is not subtle, and it should not be in a game about Rorschach.

The two heroes give the action its main bit of variety. Rorschach is the quicker, scrappier choice, particularly useful when a weapon is lying around. Nite Owl brings more force and gadgets instead. Neither approach changes the basic rhythm of clearing out another group, but choosing a favorite makes repeat play or a co-op run more appealing.

The trouble is how quickly that rhythm settles in. Part 2 has only three stages, and its handful of new enemy types cannot hide that the underlying game is unchanged from the first episode. If you liked Part 1’s uncomplicated beat-’em-up loop, that continuity is perfectly fine. If its repeated crowds already wore you down, this sequel has little leverage to change your mind.

Split-screen local co-op is the best reason to bring this one back out. Having one person play Rorschach and the other Nite Owl suits the paired-hero setup, and the different strengths make the duo feel less redundant. Solo play still works, but the short campaign and familiar encounters make it feel more disposable on your own.

Graphics

Part 2 sticks to a grimy, low-lit version of Watchmen’s streets and interiors. Rorschach’s dark coat and pale mask stand out well against brick walls, battered industrial rooms, lockers, scattered debris, and the dirty glow of green or orange lighting. Blood-spattered hits and enemies crumpling around a bat give the fights some needed nastiness, though the regular thugs are visually plain and the spaces can look drab.

Watchmen: The End Is Nigh - Part 2: Rorschach has many enemies. But that they should be afraid of him.

Story

Set five years after the first chapter, the story finds Rorschach and Nite Owl operating after the Keene Act has outlawed masked crimefighters. Their hunt for a missing girl sends them through a strip club and a mansion, giving the game a direct, street-level mystery rather than a sprawling Watchmen epic.

That narrower scope fits the characters better than a grand attempt to retell the larger saga would have. Rorschach’s hostility is the main draw, while Nite Owl provides a useful contrast in the partnership. The investigation is primarily an excuse to move from one brawl to the next, so do not expect the plot to carry much weight beyond its rough premise.

The motion-comic bookends help preserve the comic-book connection, and Patrick Wilson and Jackie Earle Haley return to voice Nite Owl and Rorschach. Their performances add more character than the brief campaign has time to build on its own. Fans attached to these particular versions of the heroes will get the most from the story material.

Overall Experience

Watchmen: The End Is Nigh – Part 2 is a serviceable continuation that understands the immediate pleasure of letting Rorschach and Nite Owl rough up a room full of criminals. It has enough personality in its leads and enough force in its brawling to make a single playthrough mildly satisfying.

But it feels like an add-on-sized follow-up rather than a meaningful step forward. The same gameplay, a short run of stages, and only modest enemy additions leave too little room for the action to develop. The game is at its best when you accept it as a compact co-op brawler, not as a deep or varied action game.

Give it a chance if you enjoyed the first part, want a local co-op night with a Watchmen coat of paint, or simply like the idea of Rorschach weaponizing whatever is nearby. Everyone else can safely pass. The payoff is a few enjoyably grim fights and good character voices, but not much beyond them.
