Toy Soldiers: Cold War

Toy Soldiers: Cold War turns the Cold War into the kind of childhood battle you would have staged across a floor, only with toy tanks, helicopters, submarines, and airstrikes tearing through a miniature war zone. It starts with the satisfying basics of tower defense, then gets more hands-on when you take direct command of a gun emplacement or jump into a vehicle yourself.

Gameplay

Toy Soldiers: Cold War understands that placing defenses is only half the fun. You begin by guarding key points against incoming enemy forces, choosing anti-tank and anti-air weapons to cover the routes that matter. Then, when a position comes under real pressure, you can take command of a defensive structure yourself. That shift from setting a plan to personally firing the weapon gives the familiar defense-game loop a welcome jolt of urgency.

The enemy lineup keeps you from settling into one lazy solution. Soldiers, boats, airplanes, and vehicles demand different responses, while larger threats such as a huge tank, a winged tank, and the Typhoon submarine make the battlefield feel like it is escalating rather than merely sending more bodies down the same path. You need to think about coverage, but you also need to be ready to intervene when the pressure spikes.

Taking control of tanks and helicopters in third-person is the clearest expression of the game’s action side. These toys are not permanent panic buttons, since their batteries run down after limited use. That restriction is a smart source of tension: using a vehicle at the wrong moment can leave you without its firepower when a tougher wave arrives. Killstreak rewards, including airstrikes and a controllable commando, add another reason to play aggressively instead of only relying on static defenses.

Graphics

The battles play out in diorama-like miniature war scenes, which is a much better match for toy soldiers and toy vehicles than a straight-faced military look would have been. Seeing tanks, helicopters, boats, airplanes, and oversized armored threats staged as toys gives the conflict a playful scale without changing its basic military theme.

Story

This is an alternate-history Cold War where the standoff between the United States and USSR has turned into open conflict. It is a clean excuse to bring 1980s-era military hardware into a toy-box battlefield, rather than a premise that asks you to take its politics seriously.

The setting works because it gives both sides a recognizable military flavor while leaving room for deliberately silly threats. A winged tank and a Typhoon submarine belong to a heightened tabletop war fantasy, and the game is better for leaning into that idea.

If you want a deep campaign narrative or a detailed examination of the Cold War, this is not the reason to play. The story is a frame for missions built around defending your positions against increasingly dramatic toy attacks, and it does that job efficiently.

Overall Experience

The best moments come when a carefully planned defense starts to buckle and you take over a weapon, tank, helicopter, or commando to rescue the situation yourself, with airstrikes providing additional support. Toy Soldiers: Cold War makes strategy feel active. You are not just the person who placed the pieces before the action began.

Its strongest idea is the balance between preparation and direct control. The limited battery on vehicles prevents the third-person segments from swallowing the strategy, while killstreak rewards encourage you to stay involved. That balance can be especially satisfying if you like defense games but get impatient when they become too passive.

The Cold War theme is played for toy-box spectacle rather than realism, and that is exactly the right call. If the original Toy Soldiers formula appealed to you, this prequel offers a punchier setting and more ways to personally join the fight. Even on its own, it is an easy recommendation for anyone who wants tactical placement, shooter-style intervention, and miniature military chaos in the same package.
