WHY IT MATTERS

What it does

Runs ColecoVision and related 8-bit home/computer systems on Nintendo DS/DSi hardware (homebrew). The Phoenix-Edition branch maintained in the wavemotion-dave GitHub adds support for many related systems and modern bugfixes and user-interface improvements.

BEST FOR

Notable strengths

Designed specifically for the DS family — lightweight UI and controls mapped to the DS layout; supports a wide set of Coleco/ADAM-era image formats and cartridge bankswitching practices in a DS-friendly package; active-ish repository with release binaries distributed via GitHub releases.

The people behind ColecoDS

History & lineage

ColecoDS started as a ColecoVision emulator for the Nintendo DS (an original port credited to Alekmaul in historical notes). The wavemotion-dave repository is a later Phoenix-Edition fork that consolidated ports, updated code, and expanded supported systems. The project and forks have appeared in homebrew archives and emulator lists for many years; the wavemotion-dave repo shows ongoing maintenance and tagged releases on GitHub (project history and releases visible in the repository).

What ColecoDS supports

  • ColecoVision (primary)
  • ADAM (Coleco ADAM)
  • Several MSX/Coleco-era systems as provided by the Phoenix-Edition fork (per repository notes)
  • Runs on Nintendo DS / DSi hardware via homebrew flashcart or DS emulator that accepts DS homebrew ROMs

ColecoDS setup guide

Setup note: Practical setup notes for using ColecoDS on a physical Nintendo DS/DSi (homebrew) or a DS emulator. This guide focuses on verified project artifacts and repository information; do not assume the emulator includes any commercial ROMs, firmware, or proprietary BIOS files.

  1. 1 — Verify repository and grab the release: Confirm you are using the official wavemotion-dave/ColecoDS repository and download a release asset from the GitHub Releases page (the repository contains tags and binaries). Use the latest released build that matches your target (DS vs DSi if the release provides variants). References list the repository and releases as the official distribution point.
  2. 2 — Choose your target: flashcart or DS emulator: To run ColecoDS on real hardware you will need a DS flashcart (homebrew-capable cartridge) that accepts .nds homebrew ROMs. For testing you may run the downloaded .nds in a desktop DS emulator (e.g., an emulator that supports homebrew .nds files). Follow the flashcart or emulator documentation for installing/unlocking and running homebrew executables.
  3. 3 — Copy the .nds and assets to your device: Copy the downloaded .nds file from the GitHub release to the flashcart’s storage or the DS emulator’s homebrew folder. If the release package includes optional folders (manuals, BIOS loader helpers, or sample ROM folders), read the repository README for how the emulator expects cartridge images to be organized on the SD card/flashcart.
  4. 4 — Cartridge/ROM image formats and storage layout (practical handling): ColecoDS historically accepts ColecoVision cartridge images and related formats. The repo README documents supported image extensions and any expected folder layout; follow those instructions exactly. The emulator does not include commercial ROMs — supply your own images and keep them on removable storage used by your flashcart or the emulator host.
  5. 5 — Controls, menus and runtime options: Start the .nds binary on your DS or emulator. Use the on-screen menus and the DS controls to load cartridge images, change bankswitching or loading mode (if exposed), and map buttons. The repository README and any included in-release documentation describe runtime menu actions and available options; consult them for tips such as save-state handling, screen scaling options, and AY/TMS sound toggles if present.
  6. 6 — Building from source (optional, for developers): If you need a custom build, clone the GitHub repository and follow the project README/build notes. The repo contains source, changelogs, and build instructions; use an appropriate DS toolchain and homebrew SDK as documented by the project. Building from source is necessary if you want instrumentation, patched fixes, or to target unusual hardware variants.
  7. 7 — Troubleshooting and compatibility notes: If games fail to load or behave oddly, consult the repository issues page and README for known limitations, bankswitching modes, and system-specific caveats. Community forums and historical pages that archive DS homebrew can be useful for legacy tips; the GitHub issue tracker is the authoritative place to report current problems for the wavemotion-dave fork.

Software reminder: The emulator does not include or distribute commercial ColecoVision/ADAM software, BIOS, or firmware. Provide your own legally-obtained images and follow local laws. Do not copy proprietary BIOS or cartridge ROMs unless you own them and your use is lawful.
