WHY IT MATTERS

Why use IodineGBA?

Runs entirely in a browser with no build step required; useful for quick testing, demos, embedded pages, or playing GBA software where installing a native emulator isn’t convenient. The codebase is a JavaScript port/implementation intended for portability and easy embedding on web pages.

BEST FOR

What IodineGBA is best for

Browser-based access to GBA emulation: embedding on web pages, quick ROM testing, demos, and lightweight usage on desktops, laptops, tablets and phones that run modern browsers. Also useful as a reference implementation for JavaScript-based emulation.

The people behind IodineGBA

History and status

IodineGBA traces to a JavaScript GBA project originally authored by Grant Galitz (copyright notices in the repository show 2010–2017). The repository you supplied (taisel/IodineGBA) is a GitHub-hosted copy with a gh-pages demo. The project is distributed as browser-ready HTML/JS and has seen multiple forks and community-hosted pages. The GitHub repository contains the emulator source, example UI (index.html) and a live demo page. The repository shows a small number of recent commits and forks; development activity appears modest and primarily community-driven via forks and hosted demos rather than a large, centralized release program. No official binary releases are shown in the repository Releases section; the primary distribution method is the repository itself and the published gh-pages demo.

What IodineGBA supports

  • Nintendo Game Boy Advance (software ROMs)
  • Modern desktop and mobile web browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Safari)
  • Input: keyboard; on-screen touch controls (demo UI)
  • Save/import/export slots via the web UI

IodineGBA setup guide

Setup note: Practical setup: use the online demo for immediate play, or run the emulator locally by cloning the repository and serving index.html over a local HTTP server. Below are step-by-step instructions tuned to a typical developer / advanced user workflow.

  1. 1) Try the live demo first: Open the project's GitHub Pages demo to confirm the emulator runs in your browser and to learn the UI (file inputs, controls, save import/export). The demo includes on-screen controls and settings for scaling, speed, and audio.
  2. 2) Get the code (clone or download): From the GitHub repository page, either download the repository as a ZIP or clone it with git: git clone https://github.com/taisel/IodineGBA.git. Cloning preserves history; downloading ZIP gives a ready-to-run snapshot.
  3. 3) Serve locally (don’t just open file://): Because browsers block certain APIs for local files, run a simple local HTTP server from the repository folder. Examples: Python 3: python -m http.server 8000 (then open http://localhost:8000/) or Node: npx http-server -p 8000. Then open index.html from the served site in a modern browser.
  4. 4) Load a GBA ROM: Use the File input labeled 'Game' in the demo/UI to load a .gba ROM file from your machine. The emulator UI also shows a 'BIOS' input field; the repository/demo exposes a BIOS field in the UI, so if you have a GBA BIOS you can provide it there. The project does not include any BIOS or commercial game files.
  5. 5) Configure controls and performance options: The UI exposes options like Smooth Scaling, Dynamic Speed, CPU/GPU off-thread, audio toggle, and keyboard or on-screen bindings. Map controls using the 'GBA Bindings' and 'Emulator Bindings' sections in the page.
  6. 6) Saves and state management: The demo UI includes 'Saves' with Import and Export options. Use Export All Saves to back up save data. For persistent saves locally, use the provided export/import functions; the emulator uses browser storage mechanisms, so clearing browser storage may remove saves.
  7. 7) Running headless or embedding: Because the emulator is HTML/JS, you can embed index.html or the emulator engine into another page. Review index.html and associated .js files to find the initialization entry points if you intend to embed or modify behavior. Serving via a normal web server is recommended.
  8. 8) Building / development notes: The repository is a JavaScript project (static files). There is no complex build step required to run the packaged demo files. If you plan to modify/extend the project, edit the JS sources in the repo and test via a local HTTP server. Follow usual web-development debugging practices (browser devtools, console logs).

Software reminder: The repository and demo do not include commercial games, BIOS files, or firmware. If you use BIOS or commercial ROMs, ensure you have legal right to those files and provide them yourself.
