NINTENDO 64 EMULATOR
Mupen64Plus
A cross-platform, plugin-based Nintendo 64 emulator that separates its core, video, audio, input, and RSP components for flexible frontends and system-specific tuning.

WHY IT MATTERS
A modular foundation for N64 emulation
Mupen64Plus turned the original Mupen codebase into a reusable core with replaceable graphics, audio, input, and signal-processor plugins. That design made it useful both as a standalone emulator and as the engine inside many frontends and retro-gaming systems.
BEST FOR
Frontends, Linux systems, and careful tuning
It suits players who want control over plugins and configuration, especially on Linux or in a frontend that supplies a friendlier library interface. The modular design is powerful, but individual Nintendo 64 games may still benefit from different graphics settings or compatibility notes.
The people behind Mupen64Plus
From Mupen64-64bit to a cross-platform project
Mupen64Plus began in 2007 as a 64-bit-oriented fork of Hacktarux's Mupen64. Richard Goedeken and project contributors expanded it into a portable plugin-based emulator, separating the emulation core from the command-line interface and the video, audio, input, and RSP plugins used around it.
What Mupen64Plus supports
- Nintendo 64 cartridge images used from legally dumped copies, with compatibility varying by title and plugin combination.
- Dynamic recompilers for several processor families alongside interpreter-based execution paths.
- Replaceable video, audio, input, and RSP plugins, plus integration with third-party graphical frontends.
- Save states, controller profiles, rumble support, speed controls, cheats, screenshots, and high-resolution texture workflows.

Get Mupen64Plus
Start with the official project site and read the package notes for your operating system. Mupen64Plus itself uses a command-line interface; if you prefer a visual game library, choose a maintained frontend that clearly documents which Mupen64Plus components it bundles.

A practical Mupen64Plus setup guide
Setup note: Mupen64Plus is easiest to understand as a group of cooperating modules. Set up the core and a known-good plugin set first, confirm one game works, and only then experiment with alternative video plugins or per-game adjustments.
- Choose the package and interface you actually want: Download the official build for your operating system or select a maintained frontend that explicitly uses Mupen64Plus. A frontend can simplify browsing and configuration, while the official console interface exposes the project's settings directly.
- Keep the core and plugins together: Install the core, command-line UI, and required video, audio, input, and RSP plugins as one matching set. Mixing components from unrelated releases is a common cause of startup errors and missing configuration options.
- Add one verified game dump for the first test: Use a clean dump from a Nintendo 64 cartridge you own and place it in a simple library folder. Test a single known game before importing a larger collection so file-format or plugin problems remain easy to identify.
- Map the unusual Nintendo 64 controller carefully: Bind the analog stick, D-pad, A and B buttons, Start, shoulder buttons, Z trigger, and four C buttons deliberately. For a modern dual-stick controller, decide whether the right stick or face buttons should represent the C buttons, then save that mapping as a reusable profile.
- Start with the bundled graphics path: Use the included video plugin and a modest internal resolution for the first launch. After confirming stable video and sound, raise resolution or try another maintained plugin when a particular game needs different rendering behavior.
- Check game-specific compatibility before heavy tweaking: Nintendo 64 games sometimes rely on unusual graphics or timing behavior. Consult the project's compatibility notes and change one option at a time, keeping per-game settings separate from a stable global configuration.
- Protect saves and record the working configuration: Back up native save files and important save states, especially before changing plugins or upgrading. Keep a note of the core and plugin versions that work well for difficult games so you can reproduce the setup later.
Software reminder: Use cartridge images, texture packs, firmware data, and other files only when you have the right to use them. Mupen64Plus does not provide commercial Nintendo 64 games.
