GAMECUBE WII EMULATOR

rustcube

rustcube — a work-in-progress GameCube emulator written in Rust. The repository is an open-source WIP that aims to run GameCube images and the IPL/BIOS; it includes a basic GTK-based debugger and is built with Cargo.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why rustcube exists

rustcube appears to be a personal/independent reimplementation of a GameCube emulator core in Rust. The README describes active development toward booting the GameCube BIOS and provides developer-focused tools (a basic GTK debugger). The project is positioned as a work-in-progress rather than a finished end-user emulator.

BEST FOR

Notable present state

Repository contains an emulator core that can be run from the Rust toolchain and accepts GameCube IPL (BIOS), DOL, ISO and GCM files as input. A GTK-based debugger binary is provided as a separate Cargo package. The project is licensed MIT/Apache-2.0.

History & status

The GitHub repository for rustcube shows active development (many commits) but the README explicitly marks it WIP and states "Work is in progress to boot the Gamecube BIOS." The project provides developer build/run instructions rather than packaged releases; the GitHub releases page has no published releases. The repository currently serves as a code-first experimental emulator rather than a polished consumer product.

What rustcube supports

  • GameCube (targeted)
  • DOL executables (GameCube homebrew)
  • ISO and GCM disc images
  • GameCube IPL (BIOS) as input

rustcube setup guide

Setup note: This guide explains how to build and run rustcube from source using the Rust toolchain and how to run the included basic debugger. It is based on the project's README and repository contents. If you plan to run commercial games you must obtain any required BIOS or disc images yourself; rustcube does not include firmware or commercial game files.

  1. Prerequisites: Install Rust (rustup and cargo). Ensure you have a compatible rust toolchain (stable or as recommended by the repository). On Linux or macOS you will need development libraries required by any Rust crates the project uses (GTK development packages if you want to use the GTK-based debugger).
  2. Clone the repository: Clone from the project's official repository (msierks/rustcube) and change into the repository directory.
  3. Build and run the emulator (basic): From the repository root, run cargo run — <PathToIPL/DOL/ISO/GCM>. The README documents that rustcube accepts a GameCube IPL (bios) or DOL/ISO/GCM paths as the single command-line argument. Example: cargo run — /path/to/game.iso
  4. Enable debug logging: To enable debug logging set the RUST_LOG environment variable when running cargo. Example: RUST_LOG=debug cargo run — /path/to/file
  5. Run the GTK-based debugger: The repository contains a separate debugger package. Run it with cargo run -p debugger — <PathToIPL/DOL/ISO/GCM>. The README warns the debugger is very much a work-in-progress and may be missing features.
  6. Notes on BIOS / IPL: The README mentions testing with a specific IPL.bin (it includes an SHA-1 in the README). You must supply any BIOS/firmware files yourself; rustcube does not ship or provide commercial firmware or games. The README also indicates the project is still working on fully booting the GameCube BIOS.
  7. Platform specifics and dependencies: The project is built with cargo and thus can target any platform supported by Rust provided the necessary native dependencies are installed. The GTK-based debugger will require GTK development libraries and a working display environment. Because the repository is code-first and lacks packaged binaries, building on Windows, macOS or Linux may require installing system libraries and following platform-specific Rust toolchain setup.
  8. Troubleshooting and development tips: Enable RUST_LOG for more runtime information. Use cargo run from the repository root. Check the repository issues/commits for current problems and recent changes. If you intend to contribute, follow the repository's contribution/license notes (dual-licensed MIT/Apache-2.0).

Software reminder: rustcube is a work-in-progress source project. There are no official releases on the GitHub releases page; build from source with cargo and provide your own BIOS/disc images. Follow the repository for updates and consult its README for exact command syntax.
