COMMODORE C64 EMULATOR CORE
VICE x64
VICE x64 is the Libretro/RetroArch core build of the VICE family, providing Commodore 64 (C64) emulation as a loadable libretro core.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why this core exists
The libretro VICE core packages the long-standing VICE Commodore emulator family into a libretro/RetroArch-compatible core so RetroArch and other libretro frontends can run C64 content using VICE's emulation codebase.
BEST FOR
Best for
Users who want VICE C64 emulation inside RetroArch or other libretro frontends, or who need a single-core option for running .d64/.t64/.prg and similar C64 disk/tape images inside RetroArch ecosystems.
The people behind VICE x64
History & provenance
VICE (Versatile Commodore Emulator) is a mature, cross-platform Commodore 8-bit emulator family (C64, C128, VIC-20, PET, Plus/4, CBM-II, etc.) with long-form documentation and upstream source at the VICE project. The libretro 'vice-libretro' repository is a port/wrapper that builds VICE variants as libretro cores (named x64, x64sc, x64dtv, xscpu64, etc.) so they run inside RetroArch and other libretro frontends. The libretro packaging preserves many VICE configuration options and supports using VICE command files and per-core configuration where implemented. The upstream VICE project and the libretro port are active repositories with public source and documentation. Sources consulted include the libretro documentation pages for the VICE core, the libretro/vice-libretro GitHub repository, and the upstream VICE manual and project pages.
What VICE x64 supports
- Commodore 64 emulation (C64)
- Runs as a libretro core inside RetroArch and other libretro frontends
- Core variants: x64, x64sc, x64dtv, xscpu64 (as provided by the libretro packaging)
- Host platforms supported via RetroArch: Windows, macOS, Linux, Android (platform availability depends on RetroArch build and whether the core binary is available for that platform)
Download and availability
OFFICIAL DOWNLOADS
Get VICE x64
Obtain the vice-libretro core through your libretro frontend (RetroArch's Core Updater / Core Downloader) or by building/downloading core binaries from the libretro/vice-libretro project releases. RetroArch users should use the Core Downloader (Online Updater) to install the appropriate VICE core for their platform. The libretro docs page for downloading cores describes the process and the libretro vice documentation page details available core names and options.

Setup note: Practical setup notes for using the VICE x64 libretro core in RetroArch (or other libretro frontends): read these steps carefully — libretro cores are not full RetroArch installs, and some VICE features (ROM/Bios file locations, snapshot compatibility, advanced SID emulation) require extra configuration.
- 1) Install RetroArch (or compatible frontend): Install an official RetroArch build for your host (Windows/macOS/Linux/Android). Use the platform-appropriate RetroArch distribution from the RetroArch project or your platform package manager. Confirm RetroArch runs before installing cores.
- 2) Download the VICE core via Core Downloader: Open RetroArch, go to Online Updater (Core Updater / Download a Core), and search for the VICE core entries. Core names in libretro documentation include variants such as 'VICE x64', 'VICE x64sc', and 'VICE x64dtv'. Select the appropriate core for Commodore 64 (commonly listed as vice_x64 or vice_x64sc) and download it. If the core is not available for your platform via the Core Updater, you can build the core from the libretro/vice-libretro source or obtain a platform binary from a trusted distributor; ensure it matches your RetroArch architecture (x86_64, arm64, etc.).
- 3) Prepare C64 content files (images, snapshots, cartridges): VICE cores accept common Commodore image formats such as .d64, .d81, .t64, .prg, .crt and tape images. The core may accept archives (.zip/.7z) depending on frontend support. Do not expect commercial BIOS/firmware/ROM files to be bundled; provide legally obtained images as required. Some snapshot formats (for example GTK3VICE .vsf snapshots) may not be compatible with the libretro core; if you rely on snapshots, test one before broad use.
- 4) Configure per-core options and resources: VICE includes many options (video palette, CPU model, SID emulation, joystick ports). Expose and set commonly used libretro core options through RetroArch's Quick Menu -> Options while the core is loaded. For advanced VICE command-line options or resource files, the libretro port supports using .cmd files (VICE command files) where supported by the core; consult the vice-libretro README for the exact mechanism. If you need more detailed VICE-specific configuration (paths for ROMs, snapshots, or custom device images), consult the VICE manual and the libretro repo documentation to determine where the core expects configuration or how to pass an external .cmd file.
- 5) Input and joystick mapping notes: By default VICE maps joystick/input differently than native VICE GUIs; RetroArch input mapping should be used to map keys/joysticks to port 1 or 2 as required. Some user reports note joystick defaults and port assignments; verify joystick settings in the core options and RetroArch Input settings if controllers do not behave as expected.
- 6) Audio / SID emulation performance: High-accuracy SID emulation and some video features can require more host CPU resources. If you experience audio glitches, try switching to lower-accuracy SID settings in the core options or enable 'fast' modes where available. On lower-powered devices, reduce filter/scanline options and use faster palette/renderer settings exposed by the core.
- 7) Troubleshooting & advanced use: If the core cannot find expected ROM/kernel files, ensure your content is in the locations the core or VICE expects, or create a .cmd file to specify paths. For snapshot compatibility issues, consult both the upstream VICE manual and the libretro vice README to check supported snapshot formats. If you encounter core-specific bugs, the libretro/vice-libretro project's issue tracker is the appropriate place to report them.
Software reminder: The core does not include commercial game images, proprietary BIOS, or firmware. Provide your own legally obtained content and consult the upstream VICE manual for detailed file-format and resource-path information.
