SNES
The SNES is Nintendo's 16-bit home console, known in Japan as the Super Famicom. Some cartridges use enhancement chips for specialized effects.

The first time players guided Mario onto Yoshi’s back in Super Mario World, the SNES’s expanded color palette and layered backgrounds made Dinosaur Land feel more alive than any NES world. Nintendo’s new controller, with its four face buttons and shoulder triggers, gave players more direct control over Mario’s moves and let developers map new actions without awkward combinations. The SNES’s Ricoh 5A22 processor wasn’t the fastest among 16-bit consoles, but its graphics chips supported smooth scrolling, transparency, and the famous Mode 7 effect that let games like F-Zero and Super Mario Kart spin and scale backgrounds for a sense of depth.
The hardware in practice
Super Metroid took advantage of these features to create a sprawling, interconnected world. The game’s atmospheric soundtrack, made possible by the Sony SPC700 audio chip, set a mood that was rare for the era. Players could hear echoing drips in Brinstar or the hum of machinery in Norfair, with sampled sound effects and multi-layered music that the NES simply couldn’t produce. The SNES’s 128 KB of RAM and 64 KB of VRAM allowed for larger, more detailed sprites and backgrounds, but developers still had to work within tight memory limits, especially as games grew in ambition.
Games and ownership
As the SNES library expanded, some cartridges included enhancement chips like the Super FX, which powered the polygonal ships in Star Fox. These chips let developers sidestep the console’s hardware limits, but also raised the cost of certain games. The SNES’s cartridge format kept load times short and made saving progress easy, but also meant that each game’s size and features were bound by the physical memory inside its shell. The result was a system that encouraged technical creativity, visible in the variety of visual effects and soundscapes across its library.
