Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 – Stimulus Package

Stimulus Package gets its value from variety rather than reinvention. You drop back into Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer with five fresh places to learn, and the strongest immediate hook is moving between very different spaces: tight apartments in Bailout, open ground around Overgrown, the clutter of Salvage, and the industrial lanes of Storm.

The two returning Call of Duty 4 maps give the pack a welcome nostalgic pull, while the new maps stop it from feeling like a straight rerun. It is a decent, rather than essential, map drop: worthwhile if you already spend plenty of time in Modern Warfare 2’s multiplayer and want more rotation, but not substantial enough to change anyone’s mind about the base game.

Gameplay

Stimulus Package is at its best when you have played enough Modern Warfare 2 to feel the usual map rotation becoming familiar. Five new arenas are not a radical shake-up, but they do give matches a different rhythm simply by asking you to navigate apartments, fields, scrapyard clutter, and warehouse grounds instead of retracing the same routes.

Bailout and Salvage stand out as the most immediately distinct new locations. An apartment complex suggests more enclosed fights and corners to check, while Salvage’s snowy junkyard gives the action a rougher, more cluttered backdrop. Storm’s warehouse complex and the village-and-fields layout of Overgrown broaden the selection further, so the pack does not settle into one environmental theme.

The headline attraction for longtime Call of Duty fans is the return of Overgrown and Crash from Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare. Their inclusion gives the DLC a familiar comfort, though it also means two of its five maps are revisits rather than wholly new ground. That split makes the pack feel useful as a multiplayer expansion, not especially ambitious as one.

Graphics

The maps offer a clean change of scenery: Bailout’s apartment buildings, Overgrown’s village and open fields, Crash’s urban streets, Salvage’s snow-covered junkyard, and Storm’s warehouses are easy to distinguish at a glance. Salvage is the most visually different of the group, with its white snow set against piled industrial debris.

Story

There is no campaign thread here; Stimulus Package is built entirely around multiplayer maps. That makes story a non-factor in the purchase decision.

What it does offer is a small piece of series history through Crash and Overgrown. Returning to locations associated with Call of Duty 4 gives veteran matches a sense of continuity, even without any new narrative context.

If you come to Modern Warfare 2 for its single-player drama, this add-on will not extend that experience. Its reason to exist is the next multiplayer session, not a new chapter.

Overall Experience

Stimulus Package is a solid map pack with a narrow purpose. The five-map spread has enough contrast to make it feel more worthwhile than a set of near-identical arenas, and the pair of returning maps is a genuine bonus if you have fond memories of Call of Duty 4.

Its limitation is just as clear: this is more Modern Warfare 2, not a new reason to become invested in Modern Warfare 2. If the base multiplayer already has you hooked, the extra locations can refresh your routine. If you were tired of the underlying game, these maps are unlikely to reverse that feeling.

Buy in for the locations you will actually revisit. Fans wanting apartment blocks, snowy scrap, warehouse territory, and two familiar Call of Duty 4 battlegrounds will get a worthwhile rotation boost; everyone else can comfortably treat it as optional.
