Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden – Ten no Haō

Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden – Ten no Haō puts you in Raoh’s boots for a compact PSP fighter built around the pleasure of trading blows with familiar Fist of the North Star rivals. Its strongest hook is simple: pick a combatant, learn that character’s attacks, build meter, and cash it in on special moves when the fight is ready to turn.

The Raoh-focused story mode gives the game a useful sense of direction beyond isolated matches, while versus play lets the roster breathe outside that campaign. It is a good fit if you want a licensed fighting game with a direct arcade-like structure and a particular interest in Raoh’s side of the Hokuto no Ken world.

Gameplay

The first hour has a clean, immediate pull: this is a one-on-one fighter where you are learning a character’s attack set while looking for the right time to turn built-up special meter into a bigger statement. That structure suits Hokuto no Ken well. Ordinary exchanges establish the rhythm, then the special attacks promise a more decisive swing once you have earned the resources to use them.

Raoh is the center of the story mode, and that focus matters. Rather than treating the license as a disconnected collection of matches, the campaign has you take him through fights against characters he encounters in the original story. If Raoh is the reason you came in, this is the mode to start with; it gives each bout more context than simply moving from one opponent to the next.

Versus mode is where you can step away from Raoh and explore the roster of more than a dozen characters. Every fighter has specific attacks, abilities, and special moves, so the fun should come from finding whose tools match your instincts instead of expecting one universal style. CPU matches are there for practice, and Wi-Fi battles offer the more unpredictable challenge of another human opponent.

Graphics

The game draws its fighters from the manga and anime spinoff, with Raoh leading a roster of familiar Hokuto no Ken characters. On PSP, the focus stays squarely on the combatants and their individual special attacks rather than wandering away from the series’ central confrontations.

Story

Ten no Haō takes its cue from the Raoh Gaiden spinoff, putting Kenshiro’s oldest brother and brutal warlord at the front of the action. That is a worthwhile shift for fans who have spent plenty of time seeing this world through Kenshiro’s side of the conflict.

The story mode’s premise is appropriately straightforward: Raoh meets figures from the original story and fights them. It does not need a more elaborate setup to justify its matches; the pleasure is in revisiting those confrontations from Raoh’s position.

That narrow focus also makes this easier to recommend to existing fans than to somebody with no attachment to the material. You are here to inhabit Raoh’s campaign and test the cast around him, not to unravel a sprawling new plot.

Overall Experience

Hokuto no Ken: Raoh Gaiden – Ten no Haō has the right kind of modest ambition for a portable licensed fighter. It asks you to enjoy the fundamentals of one-on-one bouts, invest in a favorite character’s moves, and use meter with a little patience instead of treating every fight as button-mashing spectacle.

The payoff is strongest when the license is already doing some work for you. Raoh’s campaign gives the game a clear spine, while the larger roster and versus mode prevent it from being only a short character tour. If you enjoy the series, that combination is enough to make repeated matches feel purposeful.

For more Hokuto no Ken fighting history, Hokuto no Ken 6: Gekitō Denshōken Haō e no Michi is a related stop. Ten no Haō is the better bet when you specifically want Raoh at center stage and a portable, character-driven fighting game built around his encounters.
