ROM² Karaoke Vol. 3: Yappashi Band

ROM² Karaoke Vol. 3: Yappashi Band is a focused TurboGrafx CD karaoke disc: put on one of its 11 songs, sing along, and let the changing backdrops carry some of the atmosphere. It is more of a period-specific music package than a game you conquer, but that is part of its charm.

The three extras give a group something to do between songs. Bingo is pure luck, Shinkei Suijaku is a tile-pair memory game, and Cockroach is the one with the most immediate game-like energy thanks to its top-down arcade action for up to four people.

Gameplay

The first few minutes tell you exactly what Yappashi Band is: a karaoke disc built around an 11-song selection, not a deep rhythm challenge with layers to master. That directness can be refreshing. Pick a song, settle in, and treat the disc as the centerpiece of a small gathering or a personal sing-along session rather than something demanding a long learning curve.

The song list gives the volume its personality. Tracks such as “Marionette,” “Train-train,” “Diamonds,” and “Watashi wa Arashi” make this feel like a curated musical snapshot rather than a random bundle. If these songs already mean something to you, the disc has an immediate pull; if they do not, the value rests on whether you enjoy the act of karaoke itself and want a distinctly early-CD-era selection.

The mini-games are sensible intermissions rather than reasons to buy the disc on their own. Bingo leans entirely on lottery-draw luck, while Shinkei Suijaku asks you to match tile pairs and offers a straightforward change of pace. Cockroach has the strongest chance of waking up a room: its top-down arcade format supports up to four players, making it the obvious pick when singing gives way to a quick competitive break.

Graphics

Song backgrounds alternate between digitized photos and hand-drawn artwork, and they can change as a song continues. That variety matters on a karaoke disc, where you may spend several minutes with one track and need something more interesting than a fixed screen.

Cockroach shifts the view to a top-down arcade layout. It is a clear contrast with the music backdrops and suits a short multiplayer diversion.

Story

Yappashi Band does not build a narrative around its songs. Its structure is closer to a music collection: each selection stands on its own, with the background imagery accompanying the performance.

That makes the mood depend heavily on what you bring to it. A favorite song can turn a simple karaoke screen into the main event, while an unfamiliar track is simply the next stop in the program.

The mini-games do not create a story thread either; they break up the musical sequence. This is a disc about moving from song to song, not following characters or chasing a plot payoff.

Overall Experience

Yappashi Band is easy to judge because it does not pretend to be anything else. You get a particular set of songs, changing photo and illustrated backgrounds, and a few compact games for downtime. Its modest scope works in its favor when you want a low-pressure social disc instead of a game that monopolizes the evening.

The biggest limitation is also the point: the package rises or falls with its music. There is no broad gameplay system here to win over someone who has no interest in karaoke or this selection. Bingo and the memory game are light diversions, and Cockroach adds a more active four-player option, but none changes the disc’s central purpose.

For TurboGrafx CD collectors, karaoke fans, or anyone drawn to Victor’s early 1990 music discs, this is a charming specialty item with a useful little party-game buffer built in. Give it a chance if singing these songs sounds like the fun; otherwise, its three extras are unlikely to be enough on their own.
