The first time players loaded up Ys Book I & II on the TurboGrafx CD, the difference was immediate: sweeping orchestral music filled the room, and characters spoke in full sentences. This wasn’t just a technical flourish, it changed how the story unfolded, making the adventure feel more alive than anything the PC Engine’s HuCards could manage. The CD-ROM2 add-on, attached to the original PC Engine, unlocked these experiences by giving developers far more storage and the ability to stream high-quality audio directly from the disc.
The hardware in practice
But the hardware’s modular approach meant that owners had to keep track of more than just discs. Early adopters needed the CD-ROM2 drive, an interface unit, and the right system card to play certain games. When Super CD-ROM2 arrived, it included extra memory, letting games like Gate of Thunder pack in more detailed graphics and longer levels. This also meant some newer titles wouldn’t run on the original setup without a memory upgrade, so players had to check compatibility before buying.
Games and ownership
Integrated models like the TurboDuo and PC Engine Duo simplified things by combining card and disc hardware in one box. These units could handle both the original CD games and the newer Super CD titles out of the box, making them a practical choice for anyone building a library. Even so, the shifting requirements and multiple hardware revisions made collecting and playing TurboGrafx CD games a more technical hobby than most consoles of the era. The system’s best moments came when the hardware’s quirks faded away and the music, voices, and sprawling adventures took center stage.
