DREAMCAST EMULATOR

Deecy

Deecy is an experimental, open-source Sega Dreamcast emulator written in Zig. It focuses on accuracy and a clean architecture and can load Dreamcast disc images (.gdi, .cdi, .chd) and raw .bin files; the project provides both build instructions and prebuilt releases for supported platforms.

WHY IT MATTERS

Why Deecy exists

Deecy is an independent reimplementation of Dreamcast hardware written in the Zig language. The author focuses on correctness, modular design and learning; the repo documents current limitations and an explicit to-do list rather than promising full game compatibility.

BEST FOR

Where Deecy is useful

Good for developers, emulator researchers, and Dreamcast enthusiasts who want an actively developed, readable codebase in Zig, a modern alternative renderer using WebGPU, and a project that documents work-in-progress features and compatibility.

The people behind Deecy

History & status

Deecy is maintained in a public GitHub repository and has an active commit history and released binaries. The project is explicitly experimental: the README lists missing features and accuracy work to be done (audio AICA improvements, renderer framebuffer handling, certain GPU features). Releases and changelogs are published on the repository releases page. Community discussion and troubleshooting appear on forums and Reddit threads; the author provides build instructions and compatibility notes in the repository and the project website. The repository includes many commits and open issues, indicating active development rather than an archived project.

What Deecy supports

  • Sega Dreamcast (emulation of console hardware)
  • Disc image formats: .gdi, .cdi, .chd
  • Raw .bin executables (experimental)
  • VMU save replacement via .vmu file

Deecy setup guide

Setup note: This setup guide covers both using prebuilt releases and building Deecy from source. Deecy requires you to supply Dreamcast BIOS/flash dumps (dc_boot.bin and dc_flash.bin) — these are not included and must be obtained by the user from their own hardware or other legal sources. The project supports Windows and Linux prebuilt binaries; building requires Zig and any platform-specific dependencies listed below.

  1. 1) Get the official binaries or source: Download the latest release archives for your platform from the project's GitHub Releases page. Alternatively clone the repository to build from source: git clone https://github.com/Senryoku/Deecy
  2. 2) Provide Dreamcast BIOS and flash: Create a data/ folder beside the Deecy executable (or in the build/run working directory). Copy your Dreamcast boot ROM and flash memory dumps into data/ named exactly dc_boot.bin and dc_flash.bin. Deecy will not run commercial disc images without these files.
  3. 3) Using prebuilt releases (Windows / Linux): Unzip the downloaded archive and run the Deecy executable. On first run, click Change Directory in the UI and select the folder containing your Dreamcast images (.gdi/.cdi/.chd). Use the Settings to map controllers or adjust VMU behaviour. The README documents CLI options for directly opening disc files (for example: -g path/to/game.gdi).
  4. 4) Building from source (required for development or platforms without a release): Install the Zig toolchain version specified in .zigversion (the repo recommends using zigup). Example workflow: zigup 0.16.0; git clone https://github.com/Senryoku/Deecy; cd Deecy; zig build run (debug) or zig build run –release=fast — -g "path/game.gdi" (release and auto-load disc). Zig will fetch most dependencies automatically. On Linux you may need libgtk-3-dev (for native file dialogs) and libudev-dev if DreamPicoPort support is desired; the README documents disabling DreamPicoPort if you do not need it.
  5. 5) Command-line options & common workflows: Deecy supports CLI options documented in the repository: -g to load disc images (.gdi/.cdi/.chd), -b to load raw .bin executables (experimental), –vmu to replace the default VMU file, –no-realtime to start with unlimited emulation speed, and options to load save states on startup. See the README section 'CLI options' for the full list and examples.
  6. 6) Controller, VMU and saves: Deecy detects and maps controllers automatically; manual assignment is available in Settings. You can replace per-game VMUs by specifying a .vmu file via the –vmu option or in Settings. Do not expect bundled savefiles or VMU images to be included with releases.
  7. 7) Troubleshooting & compatibility: Deecy is experimental: blank screens or crashes can occur with specific GPU drivers or games. The project README includes a compatibility list and a to-do list of emulator subsystems. If you run into issues, consult the repository Issues and Discussions pages and the project's documentation for known bugs and workarounds.

Software reminder: Deecy does not include Dreamcast BIOS, firmware, commercial games, or VMU data. You must supply your own copies of dc_boot.bin and dc_flash.bin and legally obtained game images.
