MAME4droid Changelog:
Rollback NetPlay: improved compatibility and stability
Rollback enhances NetPlay, making it feel like both players are on the same machine instead of waiting for each other. This release focuses on games that struggled with rollback and sessions that previously disconnected midway.
Street Fighter III now supports rollback
All CPS-3 titles: 3rd Strike, the earlier two, JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure, and Red Earth. Previously, these were stuck in Lockstep, which is problematic for fighting games.
The core issue was size. Rollback maintains numerous snapshots of machine states in memory, and a CPS-3 snapshot was very large—containing the entire game loaded from the CD, with significant amounts of unchanged code, graphics, and samples consuming memory. Now, snapshots omit this redundant data and retain only the information that the game actively modifies. What was previously unmanageable now fits comfortably.
Games that already fit also see benefits: smaller snapshots result in reduced memory usage and less processing for corrections.
More games now run in rollback mode
The host automatically shares its machine state with the joiner, enabling games that were previously unable to utilize rollback due to identical boot requirements to qualify.
Improved session stability
Joining and resynchronizing: Dropping into a session or mid-game resync could previously freeze one machine or leave a joiner with a black screen. Snapshots are now consistently taken at the end of a frame, ensuring a stable state for other players to resume from.
Addressing brief network interruptions: If too many packets were lost, a frame could remain incorrect indefinitely, causing the game to drift apart. The affected frame is now re-requested from the other player, allowing the session to self-correct. This has been tested thoroughly by intentionally severing the connection multiple times.
Dials, spinners, and 4-way sticks: Certain live control states weren’t included in rollbacks, leading to issues in analog games. These are now included with the machine state.
Quick message feature
The last release indicated a lack of chat functionality, and that still stands. However, there is now a selection of fixed phrases—hello, good game, wait a moment, insert coin and press start, I have to go. Choosing one sends a numeric code instead of text, displaying the corresponding phrase in the other player’s language. No typing, no moderation, no storage, and you can mute any incoming phrases.
Drop-in BIOS selection
For games with multiple BIOS versions, the selection picker used to start at a random choice, which could result in accidental publication of rooms if exited without decision. It now begins with the game’s default BIOS, and selecting exit cancels the process entirely.
Additional improvements
Dialogs default to a logical button selection, allowing navigation through NetPlay without screen touch. The disconnect button is now positioned away from the primary options at the bottom of the menu.
The public room board highlights the most active countries separately.
Both devices must be on the latest software
The network protocol has changed. An updated device will not connect to an older version intentionally to avoid sessions that appear operational but gradually disintegrate.
