The Avalon Hill Game Company
Founded by Charles S. Roberts in the 1950s, The Avalon Hill Game Company began as The Avalon Game Company and incorporated as Avalon Hill in the late 1950s. Based in the Baltimore/Catonsville, Maryland area, it grew from Roberts’s early wargame Tactics into a publisher of boxed strategic and historical wargames. During the 1960s–1980s period the firm expanded its lineup and, from around 1980, operated a Microcomputer Games division that adapted some titles for home computers. Notable computer and boxed titles credited to the company include Wooden Ships & Iron Men and Third Reich. The game entries below, including versions and later rereleases grouped in this archive, span systems such as Commodore 64, Apple II, Atari 8-bit, DOS, Atari 2600, VIC-20, Windows, Atari ST, Amiga, and Amstrad CPC.
