GAME BOY ADVANCE EMULATOR
SwanGBA
SwanGBA is an open-source homebrew Bandai WonderSwan (Color/Crystal) and Benesse PocketChallenge V2 emulator built to run on Nintendo Game Boy Advance hardware (and GBA-compatible flashcarts). It provides on-device menus, savestates, NVRAM support, and configurable display/sound options.

WHY IT MATTERS
Why SwanGBA exists
SwanGBA was created to allow WonderSwan and PocketChallenge software to be run directly on Game Boy Advance hardware using GBA homebrew and flashcarts. It follows in the tradition of other GBA homebrew ports (for example PocketNES) and aims for practical accuracy by including timing and CPU tests and by iterating on hardware quirks discovered during testing.
BEST FOR
What SwanGBA does well
Runs a wide selection of WonderSwan/WSColor titles on real GBA hardware, includes a menu system for loading games, managing NVRAM and save states, and exposes many machine/display/sound options. The project documents known game-specific issues and provides test programs used to improve compatibility.
The people behind SwanGBA
Project history and status
The project repository documents an active development history through 2025–2026 with incremental releases (the revision history lists releases including V0.7.6 and V0.7.7). The README and History files show the author as Fredrik Ahlström (FluBBa) and describe many emulator features, bugfixes and additions such as a HTML builder and save/load support. The repo remains available on GitHub with releases provided through the project's Releases page. User-facing notes in the README warn that certain features (for example EWRAM overclocking) may not work on all GBA variants (the Game Boy Micro is mentioned as unsupported for some hacks) and list games with known visual or emulation issues.
What SwanGBA supports
- Nintendo Game Boy Advance (real hardware)
- GBA flashcarts that run .gba homebrew binaries
- GBA emulators that accept SwanGBA .gba builds (as a homebrew binary)
- Note: not all GBA variants are equally supported (Game Boy Micro noted as problematic for some features in the README).

Setup note: This guide documents how to prepare and run SwanGBA on a GBA or compatible flashcart using the project's official resources. Follow the project's README and History notes closely — the author explicitly recommends adding BIOS files before normal ROMs when using the provided HTML builder.
- 1) Get the official release or source: Download the latest SwanGBA release archive from the project's GitHub Releases page or clone the repository. Use official release builds when available to avoid build toolchain issues. (See project Releases on GitHub.)
- 2) Use the HTML Builder to assemble a flashcart image (recommended): The repository README points to a project HTML Builder intended to add ROMs and BIOS files into a flashcart-compatible layout. Open the builder, follow its interface to add BIOS files first (the README explicitly instructs adding BIOS files before any normal ROMs), then add your WonderSwan or PocketChallenge ROM files. The builder will produce a .gba homebrew binary or packaged image suitable for your flashcart.
- 3) Prepare BIOS and ROM files (legal reminder): SwanGBA requires WonderSwan ROM images to run. The project mentions BIOS files and the README instructs adding BIOS files before ROMs. Do not use commercial BIOS or ROM images unless you legally own them. The project does not include any commercial ROMs or BIOS files.
- 4) Copy the built .gba to your flashcart or test in a GBA emulator: Transfer the produced .gba binary or the flashcart image to your flashcart's microSD or storage according to your flashcart's documented procedure. Alternatively you can test the .gba in a GBA emulator on PC that supports running homebrew .gba binaries.
- 5) First run and controls: When SwanGBA starts, press L+R to open the emulator menu. Use the D-pad to navigate, A to select, and B to back out. The README details menu options (File/Display/Machine/Settings/Debug/About) and mappings for horizontal and vertical games. Read the README for special mappings (Start=WS Start, Select=WS Sound, alternate mappings when holding L, etc.).
- 6) Savestates and NVRAM: Use the menu to Save State / Load State. SwanGBA also supports saving NVRAM (EEPROM/SRAM) for cartridges — enabling Autoload NVRAM and Autosave NVRAM in Settings will automatically associate NVRAM with selected games. The README documents NVRAM management and advises using the provided menu entries for initializing or deleting NVRAM as needed.
- 7) Performance and device notes: The emulator exposes CPU speed hacks and an EWRAM Overclock option (the README warns EWRAM overclock may not work on Game Boy Micro and 'might damage your GBA' — use at your own risk). It also provides Speed modes (Normal, 200%, Max, 50%). If you encounter audio or timing issues, consult the History and README for recent fixes and workarounds.
- 8) Debugging and known issues: The README lists games with known compatibility problems (visual glitches, timing differences) and describes internal test programs used to improve accuracy (WSCPUTest, WSTimingTest, WSHWTest, KarnakTest). If a game misbehaves, compare with the project's known-issues list and try enabling/disabling speed or rendering options.
Software reminder: SwanGBA does not include commercial game ROMs, WonderSwan BIOS files, or other copyrighted firmware. Obtain any required BIOS or game images legally before use.
