In case you missed it: Amstrad CPC action runs from pyramid traps to starfighter raids
This CPC action batch swings between demanding arcade reflexes, route planning, and a few wonderfully odd mission ideas.
“Get Dexter!”
In Crafton’s laboratory escape, eight scientists hold the code fragments needed to open a route out of the compound. Colour-matched doors, draining hazards, Nurse Pods, and Xunk’s warnings make each isometric room feel like a compact planning problem.
1942
In the Super Ace’s sorties, the vertical assault runs from Midway toward the Final Area with three evasive rolls available per life. The carrier-to-combat rhythm and power-ups from enemy formations make it a clean test of pattern reading.
3D Starstrike
In the converted-moon assaults, the Starstrike fighter moves from space dogfights to surface defenses and a reactor trench run. The cockpit wireframe view puts catwalks, turrets, and the twin reactor pods squarely in the pilot’s path.
3D Time Trek
In the pirate search across Corillian’s sectors, the routine is map, sensor sweep, warp, then a cockpit fight when contact appears. Shields, damage, and energy demand some attention, although the scan-and-move loop can become familiar quickly; how would you compare that pace with a more immediate shooter?
3D-Pinball
In the tilted single-table challenge, five balls, ramp shots, bumpers, targets, and bonus changes keep the score chase moving. There is no centre pin or tilt mechanism, so compare its riskier drains with the pinball table you know best.
750cc Grand Prix
In the six British circuit sprints, each three-lap race asks for a top-three finish against seven rivals. The tilting view sells the bike’s lean, while fuel, tyre wear, and pit timing complicate the push through the field.
A View to a Kill: The Computer Game
In Bond’s chase from Paris to the mine, the action shifts from pursuing Mayday through Paris to searching City Hall and facing a bomb in an abandoned mine. That chase-and-puzzle mix follows Max Zorin’s plan to flood Silicon Valley.
A.L.C.O.N.
In the star-powered assault on Orac, collected stars select speed, shots, bombs, lasers, missiles, or shielding as the scrolling battle continues through boss encounters. Its single looping battlefield leaves little room to relax, especially with no continues.
Abu Simbel Profanation
In Johny Jones’s cursed pyramid expedition, a transformed adventurer searches Abu Simbel for keys that can lift his curse. Long and short jumps have to clear traps and guardians through the pyramid’s chambers.
Action Force
In Wild Bill’s bridge-building escort flight, the Dragonfly must protect an advancing AWE buggy while carrying bridge sections over broken ground. Enemy aircraft, bombs, and instant-death terrain turn every rescue into a sharp prioritisation exercise.
Which of these would you tackle first on a CPC: the bridge-laying pressure of Action Force, the precise jumps of Abu Simbel Profanation, or the weapon choices in A.L.C.O.N.?
“Yes,there are two paths you can go by, but in the long run, there's still time to change the road you're on.”
