Aliens: Colonial Marines – Bug Hunt DLC

Bug Hunt strips Colonial Marines down to a blunt survival challenge: gather up to four people, pick a map, and try to outlast 30 waves of xenos and Weyland-Yutani soldiers. That simple goal gives the DLC a clearer immediate hook than a mode that asks you to learn a lot before the shooting starts.

The catch is endurance. Thirty waves is a commitment, so the tension comes from whether your group can stay coordinated and avoid letting a manageable firefight become an overwhelming pile-on. Broadside, Mercenary, and Tribute give you three places to test that nerve, but this is a focused co-op add-on rather than a major reinvention.

Gameplay

The first few waves of Bug Hunt should be easy to understand even if you only want a quick co-op session: survive the incoming enemies, then do it again with more pressure. Xenos bring the series’ signature threat, while Weyland-Yutani soldiers prevent the mode from becoming a single-note alien shooting gallery. It is a straightforward setup, but a good one for a squad that wants a shared target rather than competing against one another.

The 30-wave structure is where the mode earns its name. A short survival mode can feel disposable; this one asks whether you and your teammates can maintain discipline for a full run. Four-player cooperation is its strongest selling point, since the fun is likely to come from managing a prolonged crisis together rather than simply seeing how long one person can last.

That same structure can also become tiring. Bug Hunt has one central idea and commits to it hard, so you should go in wanting an extended horde-survival session, not a varied new campaign. The three maps—Broadside, Mercenary, and Tribute—help keep repeat attempts from happening in exactly the same place, but the core rhythm remains wave after wave of survival.

Graphics

Bug Hunt puts xenos and Weyland-Yutani soldiers on the battlefield together, giving each wave a more varied enemy lineup than a pure alien encounter. The three new maps at least offer different named arenas for the mode: Broadside, Mercenary, and Tribute.

Story

Story is not the reason to load up Bug Hunt. Its fiction is used as a clean combat frame: xenos attack, Weyland-Yutani forces join the opposition, and your team has to endure.

That is enough to make the conflict feel recognizably Alien, especially if you enjoy the series’ mix of creature danger and corporate-military hostility. Still, the mode’s 30-wave goal keeps the focus firmly on survival rather than narrative development.

Think of the premise as a reason to rally a squad, not a new chapter to savor. The payoff comes from getting farther through the assault with friends and seeing whether the group can hold together when the run grows more demanding.

Overall Experience

Bug Hunt is a narrow DLC, but it knows exactly what it wants to be: a four-player endurance mode for people who would rather cooperate against escalating waves than chase a story. That directness is refreshing if you have friends ready to play.

Its best moments should arrive when a run starts to feel precarious and your team realizes there are still many waves left. The mix of xenos and Weyland-Yutani soldiers gives the mode a useful bit of variety, while the three maps provide a reason to change venues between attempts.

Buy into it for the social survival challenge, not for breadth. If a 30-wave co-op gauntlet sounds like a satisfying way to spend an evening with three other Alien fans, Bug Hunt is a sensible addition; if repetition wears you down quickly, its single-minded design will show its limits fast.
