XCOM: Enemy Unknown – Slingshot

Slingshot earns its place by breaking up an early XCOM campaign with three connected Council missions rather than handing you a disposable cosmetic pack. The rescue of Triad operative Shaojie Zhang gives the missions a clear through-line, and the shift from a graveyard to a subway line and then a battleship keeps this compact detour from feeling like the same assignment repeated.

There is a catch worth knowing before you commit: you need to begin a new save, and the rewards can put powerful technology in your hands much earlier than usual. If you want a more directed early-game side story and do not mind that potential balance shake-up, this is a worthwhile add-on. If preserving the base campaign’s usual technology curve matters more, think carefully before installing it.

Gameplay

Slingshot arrives early enough to matter. Around the point where the first terror mission would strike, it drops a three-mission Council arc into the campaign, giving you something more purposeful than a one-off distraction. The immediate hook is simple: rescue Shaojie Zhang, then see the operation through across three linked encounters.

The mission lineup has a welcome sense of movement. A graveyard, a subway line, and a battleship are distinct places for a short DLC run, and that progression helps the three missions feel like one compact operation instead of unrelated bonus maps. Because they are static missions, though, this is a tightly authored detour rather than a source of endless campaign variety.

The bigger consideration is the reward structure. Completing Slingshot can unlock the Fusion Lance and Blaster Launcher much earlier than a regular campaign would. That is exciting if you enjoy being handed a major edge for taking on extra missions, but it can also change the rhythm of XCOM’s research and equipment progression. Treat it as an early-campaign boost, not a neutral side quest.

Graphics

The most concrete visual benefit is the change of scenery: the three China-set battles move from a graveyard to a subway line and a battleship. Slingshot also adds hair and helmet choices for both genders, plus a new armor style, so your roster gets a little more room to look like your own squad.

Story

This is a small story, but it has a useful advantage over generic Council work: it follows one named objective across all three missions. You are rescuing Triad operative Shaojie Zhang, and that gives the assignment a reason to continue after the first fight.

Zhang is more than a name in a mission briefing. He arrives as a new soldier with his own background story and voice acting, which makes him feel more deliberately placed than an ordinary recruit. That added personality is exactly what a brief DLC arc needs.

Do not expect a huge separate campaign. Slingshot is a concise strand woven into Enemy Unknown’s early game, and its narrative value comes from continuity: one operative, one rescue, and three linked stops. It is focused enough to be memorable without overstaying its welcome.

Overall Experience

Slingshot is a good fit if you have started Enemy Unknown again and want its early stretch to carry a little more authored momentum. The linked mission structure and voiced recruit make it feel like a genuine mini-operation rather than a bundle of gear.

The new customization options are pleasant extras, but the missions and their unusually early technology rewards are the reason to care. That reward can be either the selling point or the warning label, depending on how much you value XCOM’s normal climb toward stronger weapons.

The new-save requirement is the main inconvenience. Still, if you are beginning fresh, Slingshot is easy to recommend to anyone who wants a short, story-led diversion with meaningful campaign consequences. It is less essential for a purist run built around preserving the base game’s progression pace.
