Hōma Hunter Lime: Special Collection Vol. 1

Hōma Hunter Lime: Special Collection Vol. 1 is a very specific kind of PlayStation package: an anime FMV adventure collection built around the first three Hōma Hunter Lime episodes, then sweetened with a short new Act 4. Its biggest upgrade is immediately meaningful for fans: every episode has voice acting, something the original releases lacked.

That also makes it a tougher recommendation for anyone who cannot follow the spoken Japanese. Beyond menu options, there are no subtitles or other on-screen text. If you are already fond of the series’ animated-adventure format, this is a compact, worthwhile archival-style collection; if you need translation support or substantial new material, it is much harder to embrace.

Gameplay

This collection asks you to meet it on its own old-school terms. You are getting three existing Hōma Hunter Lime adventures together with a brief fourth act, not a remake that tries to modernize their identity. The immediate draw is having the early material gathered on PlayStation with spoken dialogue added throughout, which gives the episodes more momentum than silent text-led scenes would have.

The practical stumbling block is language. Menus are the only place where text is displayed, while the episodes themselves have no subtitles or other text. That means your enjoyment depends heavily on understanding the voice work, or being comfortable following the action from context. It is an unusually hard barrier in an adventure game, where dialogue is often the reason to linger.

Act 4 is a nice extra rather than a reason to buy the disc by itself. It is a short episode focused on a particular masked type of BEM, so it reads more like a bonus for people already invested in Lime than a broad new starting point. If the first installment interests you, it is worth knowing that the original Hōma Hunter Lime has its own history outside this compilation.

Graphics

The visuals are rooted in anime full-motion video, with slight visual modifications made for this collection. The more notable improvement is the added voice work: it changes how the animated scenes land, even if this is still fundamentally material from earlier releases rather than a dramatic visual overhaul.

Story

The collection’s structure is straightforward: it brings together Hōma Hunter Lime, its second episode, and its third episode, then adds Act 4. That makes it a sensible way to take in the opening run in one place instead of treating each entry as an isolated curiosity.

Act 4’s focus on a masked BEM gives the package one dedicated new thread, but its short length keeps the spotlight on the original trio. Think of it as an epilogue-sized reward, not a giant new chapter that transforms the collection.

Voice acting is the central story-facing change, and it matters. Hearing scenes performed can make character exchanges feel more immediate. Yet the lack of subtitles turns that strength into a sharp dividing line: fluent Japanese speakers get the intended flow, while everyone else has to accept a much more opaque experience.

Overall Experience

Hōma Hunter Lime: Special Collection Vol. 1 has real value as a focused compilation. It preserves a run of anime adventure episodes, folds in a short new piece, and adds voices to material that originally did without them. For a fan who can understand the dialogue, that is a meaningful upgrade rather than mere packaging.

For everyone else, frustration can set in early. This is not simply a matter of missing a few optional lines; the absence of subtitles or episode text puts a wall between you and the narrative. The menu being readable does little to solve that once the actual adventure begins.

Give it a chance if you want a mid-1990s anime FMV adventure collection and have the language skills to follow it. Otherwise, the bonus act and voice work cannot fully compensate for being locked out of the dialogue that carries the experience. It is a niche release, but an appealing one for its niche.
