Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake

Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake makes a persuasive case for itself as a handheld version rather than a stripped-down afterthought. You get the original campaign’s full set of levels, then six more stages built around new environments, so there is enough solo material to make the PSP adaptation feel substantial.

The catch is that much of that campaign is familiar territory for anyone who already knows Fat Princess. The extra levels and four added multiplayer modes—Grim Reaper, Dilapidated, Demolition, and Jailbreak—give it more reason to exist, but this is a better pick for someone who wants the game on PSP than for a veteran demanding a wholesale reinvention.

Gameplay

The first-hour pull of Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake is simple: it puts a full campaign-sized chunk of Fat Princess onto PSP rather than treating the handheld release as a sampler. Every level from the original single-player campaign is here, and that immediately gives the game more weight than a portable tie-in built around a few abbreviated missions.

Six additional campaign levels are the real argument for returning if you already know the original. They are set in unique environments, which gives this version a little more than mere portability. That is a sensible amount of new material, though not enough to disguise the fact that the campaign’s foundation is carried over from the earlier game.

Multiplayer gets four new modes: Grim Reaper, Dilapidated, Demolition, and Jailbreak. Their inclusion broadens the package and gives repeat sessions a different set of labels to chase beyond the campaign. Still, the practical buying question is clear: do you want Fat Princess in a PSP-sized form, with extra stages and modes? If so, this is a well-stocked conversion. If you mainly want an all-new sequel, familiar campaign content can start to feel like the limit of the deal.

Graphics

This is third-person action on PSP, with the original campaign locations joined by six new levels that use unique environments. The added stages matter visually because they keep the portable campaign from being made up entirely of returning places.

Story

The campaign is the main framework here, and its core comes directly from the original Fat Princess. That makes this less of a fresh narrative entry than an adaptation that preserves an existing route through its levels.

The six new levels provide the clearest sense of extension. New environments can make a return trip feel less repetitive, even when much of the campaign is recognizable from the original game.

That balance is important to understand before you start. The reason to play is not a promise of a completely rebuilt story; it is the chance to take the established campaign with you and find some additional territory along the way.

Overall Experience

Fat Princess: Fistful of Cake lands as a solid, slightly compromise-shaped handheld package. It preserves all of the original campaign levels, adds six more, and supplements multiplayer with four new modes. That is enough content to make the PSP version feel purposeful.

Its biggest limitation is also obvious from its strongest feature: this is an adaptation. Returning fans will appreciate the additions, but they will also recognize that the bulk of the campaign is not new. The payoff is best when portability itself is part of what you value.

Give it a chance if you want the original game’s campaign on PSP and welcome extra levels as a bonus. Skip it only if familiar material is a deal-breaker and you need a much more radically new follow-up. As a portable expansion of an existing game, it earns a modest recommendation.
