MAME4droid 2026(0.289) v1.40.4 has been released. Developed by David Valdeita (Seleuco), MAME4droid is a port of the MAME emulator by MAMEDev and its contributors. It allows emulation of arcade games and systems such as ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, and more. This version supports over 40,000 different ROMs.

Introduced NetPlay Public Rooms
Previously, NetPlay worked over the internet without requiring an account, relay, or a trusted service, but it had a key limitation: finding an opponent. Users needed to already know someone to exchange IP addresses manually.
Public Rooms fill that gap, serving as an optional platform where hosts can advertise the games they’re playing, enabling others with the same ROM to connect easily.
It does not act as a relay; rather, it simply connects two players and then steps back, so the match proceeds directly between their devices without passing through any servers.
On the board
Room codes: each room gets a short code for easy sharing with friends.
PIN rooms: selecting Require PIN marks the room as protected, allowing only those given the PIN entry access. Notably, the PIN is not stored on the server; only a hashed version is retained.
Connection forecasts color-coded as green, amber, or red based on actual STUN measures of the routers involved, rather than mere guesses. For instance, symmetric NATs that cannot connect will show red and refuse access.
Same-network rooms are flagged, ensuring that devices within the same household connect through the LAN instead of the internet. During gameplay, each match is made using two salted fingerprints, preventing the revelation of either device’s address.
A ROM check before joining: the app verifies if the game exists in your ROMs folder and identifies any missing files, preventing you from joining a room with incorrect game files.
Unusable rooms remain visible but greyed out to indicate their status, as knowing a match is happening holds value, even if the current build isn’t compatible.
Drop-in NetPlay
Waiting for players to join previously meant watching a dialog screen. Now, you can select Start now and allow anyone to join while you play. Your room remains visible, and when another player joins, the game state transfers to them, allowing for seamless gameplay.
If they exit, you can continue playing solo as if the NetPlay had never occurred. You can re-enable it, and your room will resurface.
Rollback sessions only: this functionality does not exist in Lockstep.
Enabling mid-game may restart the session, with a warning provided before committing to the switch. NetPlay locks in specific settings the instant a game launches (including saved settings, NVRAM, Lua plugins, cheats, sound rate, and working CHD) that cannot be applied to already running games. Notably, ignoring this may lead to a gradual divergence between the two devices without any prominent error notifications.
Regarding your data, the essence is that it doesn’t exist.
MAME4droid is created by a single individual, offered freely. There are no ads, nothing to unlock or subscribe to, and zero budget for servers. Public Rooms serve as an appropriate compromise, facilitating opponent discovery while running on a minimal free instance without a database that collects your information.
Participation is optional; you’ll be prompted the first time, and should you decline, the board will not be contacted. Manual NetPlay continues functioning as usual.
Your address is not logged; it exists solely in memory while your room is active, passed only to the player who joins, and vanishes once the room closes. Server records do not store any IP addresses.
The board does not expose an address to anyone, even through the “same network” label, which only compares two salted fingerprints. The salt is freshly generated each time the server starts, ensuring today’s records cannot be matched against yesterday’s.
Your device remains anonymous. No accounts, logins, names, advertising IDs, or stored phone data that could connect different sessions. Subsequent visits do not link to prior ones.
Rooms expire after about a minute unless the host opts to keep them active.
No in-app chat will be implemented. Moderating communication amongst strangers carries significant responsibility and complying with various store obligations; hence, this project does not take that on. Utilize Discord or any existing communication method for you and your friends—only a room code is necessary for connection.
The server is open source, so you can direct the app to your own server, thereby removing my involvement from the process entirely.
