Gameplay
Tommy’s Packrat has the kind of first minute that needs no explanation. You guide the Packrat around a maze, run over seeds for points, and try not to be cornered by enemies that are actively tracking you down. That familiar chase is the whole hook, and it remains a good one: every open corridor feels safe only until a bad guy starts closing the gap.
Flashing seeds add the important reversal. Eat one and, briefly, the hunter becomes the hunted; you can eat the bad guys for bonus points as well as collect the flashing seed’s bonus. The interesting choice is whether to use that window simply to escape or to chase down enemies before it expires. That small risk-reward push keeps a basic clear-the-maze routine from becoming completely automatic.
Movement is entirely keyboard-based through the numeric keypad, while function keys handle settings. That is direct and old-school, though it asks you to be comfortable treating the keypad as your steering wheel. The nine difficulty levels matter because this is a game built around repeat attempts, not a long one-off journey. Separate high-score tables for each setting make improvement feel like the real objective.

Graphics
The action is shown from a top-down maze view, with the Packrat, seeds, flashing seeds, and pursuing bad guys laid out clearly around the corridors. The flashing seeds are the standout visual cue because they tell you at a glance when a high-value, enemy-eating opportunity is available.

Story
There is barely any story standing between you and the maze, which suits the game. The Packrat wants seeds; the bad guys want to eat the Packrat. That simple setup gives the chase an immediate, cartoonish logic without slowing down the action.
The closest thing to drama arrives when a flashing seed changes the balance of power. One moment you are slipping away from pursuers; the next, you have a short chance to hunt them. For an arcade game this stripped down, that reversal does more work than a larger plot would.
Do not come in expecting character development or a campaign to uncover. The game’s story is expressed through its loop: eat, evade, power up, and turn a narrow escape into extra points.
Overall Experience
Tommy’s Packrat is a compact arcade game that understands the strength of a clean chase. It does not bury its central idea under extra systems: collect seeds, manage danger, and make the most of the temporary advantage offered by flashing seeds. If that Pac-Man-style rhythm grabs you, the game has enough scoring pressure to encourage another run.
Its limitations are also part of the deal. With one maze-driven goal and keyboard-only control, repetition can set in quickly if you need new environments or elaborate progression. The difficulty choices help, but they refine the same core challenge rather than changing what the game is.
Give it a chance if you enjoy old-school score attacks and like learning how aggressively you can play around enemy pursuit. The payoff is not a grand finale; it is the satisfaction of surviving a tighter run, cashing in on a dangerous flashing seed, and pushing a score higher on your chosen difficulty.
