Introduction of NetPlay Public Rooms.
Previously, NetPlay operated online without an account, relay, or trusted service, but did not help users find opponents; players had to exchange IP addresses manually. Public Rooms aim to fill this gap, allowing hosts to advertise their game, enabling anyone with the same ROM to connect easily.
It does not serve as a relay; it connects players and then steps aside—games run directly between devices without server mediation.
Features include:
Room codes: Each room receives a short code for sharing.
PIN rooms: Mark rooms as protected with a PIN, which never reaches the server—only a hash is stored.
Color-coded connection forecast: Displayed as green, amber, or red based on STUN measurements of routers, helping players assess connection quality.
Same-network rooms are flagged, allowing devices in the same house to connect via LAN without going through the internet.
A ROM check before joining ensures players have the correct game file before entering the room, preventing issues with mismatched ROMs.
Unusable rooms remain visible but are greyed out.
Drop-in NetPlay: Allows players to start a game and let others join at any time, with a seamless transition of game state when new players enter.
Players can continue solo if others leave, and rooms naturally expire if not maintained.
About your data: MAME4droid is created and distributed by one person, free of ads, unlocks, or subscriptions. Public Rooms are opt-in and don’t require any personal data—no logs retain your IP address or device identity, and room expiration occurs shortly unless extended by the host.
There is no in-app chat for moderation reasons; users are encouraged to use external solutions like Discord for communication.
