MAME4droid 2026 (Version 0.289) Release 1.40.02

MAME4droid 2026(0.289) v1.40.02 has been released. MAME4droid is created by David Valdeita (Seleuco) as a port of the MAME emulator from MAMEDev and its contributors. It effectively emulates arcade games and systems such as ZX Spectrum, Amstrad CPC, MSX, etc. This edition of MAME can support over 40,000 distinct ROMs.

MAME4droid Changelog:
Introduced NetPlay Public Rooms
Previously, NetPlay allowed gameplay over the internet without requiring an account, relay, or trusted service. However, you still needed to know someone personally to exchange IP addresses.
Public Rooms is the solution for this; it’s an optional board where hosts can advertise the game they are playing, enabling anyone with the same ROM to easily connect.
It’s important to note that this is not a relay. The board facilitates connection between two players and then disengages — the match continues directly between their devices, functioning as before with no server involvement.
On the board
Room codes: Each room is assigned a short code for sharing with friends.
PIN-protected rooms: By selecting “Require PIN,” the room remains visible but is only accessible to those you inform. The actual PIN is not stored on the server — only a hash is saved.
Color-coded connection status: Green, amber, or red indicators based on actual measurements rather than assumptions. A match with incompatible routers will show red and deny connection.
Same-network rooms are highlighted, allowing devices within the same household to connect via the LAN instead of routing through the internet. The match is established using salted fingerprints — addresses remain confidential.
A ROM verification before joining: The app checks your ROMs folder and identifies any missing files before letting you join, preventing disruption for the host.
Rooms that are unusable remain visible but greyed out rather than hidden; this informs players of ongoing matches, even if the current build cannot support them.
Drop-in NetPlay
Previously, waiting for players meant staring at a dialog screen. Now, you can select “Start now,” allow anyone to join, and begin playing immediately. Your room remains active while you play; when someone joins, the game state is transferred to them, allowing seamless continuation from that moment onward.
If a player exits, you can continue as though NetPlay had not occurred, and the room can be reopened.
Note: Rollback sessions only — transferring game state necessary for drop-in functionality does not exist in Lockstep.
Activating it during gameplay might restart the session; a warning will appear before you proceed. NetPlay saves specific settings when a game starts (saved settings, NVRAM, Lua plugins and cheats, sound rate, working copy of a CHD), but these cannot be applied to an already running game. Any disregard for this results in gradual desynchronization without a specific error message.
Regarding your data — it’s quite minimal
MAME4droid is created and distributed by one individual, free of charge. There are no ads, unlockable content, subscriptions, or server upkeep budgets. Public Rooms provides a solid compromise and is essential for locating opponents, operating on a small free instance without a database to store user information.
Participation is voluntary. You’ll be prompted the first time, and if you opt out, the board is never contacted. Manual NetPlay continues to function as usual.
Your address is not logged; it exists only in memory while the room is active, is shared solely with the joining player, and vanishes alongside the room. The server maintains no records containing IP addresses.
The board does not reveal any address — not even through the “same network” badge, which is derived from a comparison of two salted fingerprints. This salt is newly generated every server restart, so past records cannot be matched with present data.
There’s no identifying information stored about your device. There are no accounts, logins, names, advertising IDs, or data held on your phone for future recognition. Two sessions from you are not connected.
Rooms will expire within about a minute unless the host requests to keep them active.
No chat functionality will be included. In-app chat necessitates moderation of user interactions, constituting a significant responsibility fraught with store obligations that a project of this size cannot sustainably manage. Use Discord or alternatives to communicate with friends — all that’s needed is a room code.
The server is open-source as well, allowing you to direct the app to your own instance, removing any reliance on me.
