Introduced NetPlay Public Rooms
Previously, NetPlay allowed internet play without an account, relay, or trusted service. The limitation was finding an opponent; users needed to exchange IP addresses manually.
Public Rooms address this gap, providing a board where hosts can advertise their games, enabling anyone with the same ROM to join.
It’s not a relay; the system connects players and then steps aside, allowing matches to occur directly between devices without server mediation.
On the board:
Room codes for easy sharing
PIN-protected rooms, which only your contacts can enter, with a hashed PIN for security
Color-coded connection forecasts (green, amber, or red) based on STUN measurements of routers
Same-network rooms are indicated allowing local connections without going through the internet, keeping device identities private
A ROM validation check before joining to prevent mismatches with the host’s game
Unusable rooms remain listed but greyed out for visibility.
Drop-in NetPlay feature
No more waiting in a dialog screen; you can start a game and let others join. Your room remains active, and when someone connects, your game state is synchronized.
You can continue playing solo if they leave; reopening the room is instantaneous.
Rollback sessions are required for drop-in functionality, and switching on this feature during a game may restart it, with prior warning provided.
Your data is minimal
MAME4droid is entirely free with no ads, subscriptions, or server upkeep costs. Public Rooms run on a small free server with no user data retention.
It is opt-in; the first prompt lets you decide whether to connect to the board. Manual NetPlay continues to function unchanged.
No logs or identifiable information are kept, and sessions expire quickly unless renewed by the host.
Chat features are not included for moderation reasons; users are advised to use external services like Discord.
The server’s open-source nature allows users to create their own setups without reliance on the developer.
