Gameplay

This is a small loadout DLC, not something that reshapes Magicka from the ground up. You choose the kimono and the whole set is equipped at once, so there is no lengthy unlock process or fiddly setup between you and the new gear.

The katana is the practical draw. Its ability to cut through armor gives it a clear combat use, which matters more than simply handing you a themed weapon with no gameplay distinction. If armored enemies have been part of what slows you down, that trait makes the set feel like more than a novelty.

The bamboo staff rounds out the costume package, though the katana is the item with the stated mechanical hook. Think of Nippon as a quick alternate kit for returning players rather than a reason to begin playing Magicka for the first time.

Graphics

The visual change is straightforward and theme-led: your wizard wears a kimono and carries a katana and bamboo staff. Since all three arrive as one equipped set, the look reads as a coherent costume rather than a collection of unrelated items.

Story

Nippon does not build its value around a new narrative. Its name instead points to the 2011 earthquake and tsunami disaster that struck Japan, giving this otherwise lighthearted item pack a serious real-world context.

Paradox donated 50% of the add-on’s revenue to the Japan Relief Support program. That commitment is the most meaningful part of the DLC’s identity, and it makes the purchase feel more purposeful than a standard cosmetic bundle.

The charity connection does not need to be overstated: you are still buying a compact Magicka outfit and gear set. But it gives the pack a clearer reason to remember than its limited contents alone would have managed.

Overall Experience

The first few minutes tell you exactly what you bought. Put on the kimono, take the matching equipment, and try the armor-cutting katana in the normal flow of Magicka. That directness is welcome for a small add-on.

Frustration can set in if you expect a substantial expansion, because the scope is deliberately narrow. There is one themed costume bundle here, and its value rises or falls on whether you enjoy using its gear and appreciate the charitable purpose behind it.

For an existing Magicka fan, Nippon is an easy, modest recommendation when you want a themed alternate loadout with one useful weapon perk. The donation commitment gives it extra goodwill; the small amount of content keeps it from being essential.
