Mini Arcades

Mini Arcades

In the spirit of procrastination I decided to post about a mini arcade I found.  I'm not sure if this is old news, but it's interesting.  This guy built mini arcades using a turbo grafx 16 and a sega genesis.  He used these mini ps1 portable screens, a retro arcade stick you hook up to a tv, and old systems.  They came out pretty nice! The post is in Spanish, but you… Read more

Harnessing the power of 8-bit for good

Harnessing the power of 8-bit for good

Racketboy, a retrogaming blog, recently posted an article that details a 2 day workshop hold in New York.  The special thing about this workshop is that the students learn how to program and design 8 bit games that can be used to disseminate important and helpful information to different communities.  One of the games helps the player learn how Malaria is spread and what you, as the player, can do to help… Read more

Retro-arcades and Hipster Culture

Retro-arcades and Hipster Culture

I'm not sure if this is a phenomena that's particular to San Francisco or if it is widespread.  I've read many a list of hipster culture (PBR, tight jeans, huge plastic sun glasses, etc etc..), but I've never read anything that detailed the role of retro gaming. In the picture you can see one of my friends playing pac man.  He took me to this bar, full of hipsters, table arcades, a… Read more

In Japan, developrs ask fans what games they want for the Playstation network

Squaresoft and Bandai-Namco have asked users in Japan to request their favorite ps1 and tg16  games via tweet. I had forgotten that you can download ps1 games to your psp via your ps3.  When I had a PSP (R.I.P. my little friend) I remember trying to play ps1 games on it via elaborate hacks and tricks.  I would definitely have paid to get some of my favorite systems on there.  It's unfortunate… Read more

Gamers don’t want short and easy games?

I'm not too sure if I agree with the following abstract, this doesn't really explain the success of Bejeweled and other popular short term games.  Arcade games have been around for quite a while, and those can be very short term. Any thoughts? Let's have a conversation :) "Good computer and video games like System Shock 2, Deus Ex, Pikmin, Rise of Nations, Neverwinter Nights, and Xenosaga: Episode 1 are learning machines.… Read more

New old games

It's oldschool! It's back in 3d form! Withall these advancements in 3d games we always come back to good 'ol 2d (and by 2d I mean on a 2d plane) game play. It's  interesting to see the new innovations that developers bring to 2d games, platform games, and fighting games. Maybe there is some space for us retro fans in this generation of gaming after all. What do you all think? Do… Read more

Metroid Fan Comic

I recently found this comic and really enjoyed the art.  I was surprised how well some of the later images were illustrated.  The story is a little odd, and the writing needs a bit of work, but the art is top notch! Some nsfw illustrations, but overall it's fine.  For those of you not used to reading manga, remember you read from right to left then move down. I remember loving comics… Read more

Pop Fiction Episode 3

Remember the days when you and your friends would talk about rumors and claim to be able to do things in games that seemed impossible? I particularly remember the blood code for Mortal Kombat1, in Mega Man 3 if 2nd player held specific buttons you could fall in gaps and not die (and jump super high), street fighter II gamepro april fools, and more.  This new series at gametrailers investigates myths in… Read more

Mario is that a coin in your pocket or…

So after all of these years I have finally figured out why Mario and the Princess are still in love. They use the Nintendo Love Tester, duh. The original device was created in 19(69) by Nintendo, ha. Who would have thought, long before the video game kings were kings they knew a think or two about geeks and love. Apparently each lover holds a ball, and the doo-hickey will yell you and… Read more

Pac-Man: The Insatiable Hunger

I laughed a little... Who knew Pac-Man was a junkie and wife-beater? Or that Frogger is a terrorist, and Donkey Kong and Mario are pitted in an epic manage-a-trois of princess passion? From creators Frank Meyer, Scott Chernoff and BJ Guyer, the TV pilot Videogame Theater delves into the world of classic videogames, supplying twisted, darkly comedic behind the scenes back-stories to iconoclastic characters.
