The Week in Emulation: September 21–28, 2026

Week of September 21–28, 2026. This is Retro Replay’s first weekly emulator briefing: one place to follow meaningful releases, nightly builds, arcade work, classic PC changes, and library tools. We reviewed this week’s release notices, then checked the highlighted changes against project release notes and source repositories. A dated build in the log below is a development snapshot, not necessarily a stable release.

The week at a glance

The four feeds carried 167 notices during this window. Many were successive daily builds of the same emulator. The most useful developments for readers were a RetroArch exit-crash fix in Azahar, continued work across several major console emulators, arcade compatibility and archive-format work in FinalBurn Neo, and larger library-management changes in OxyROMon. The complete dated feed log follows the analysis.

Console and handheld releases

Azahar 2126.1.2: a targeted RetroArch fix

Azahar’s unscheduled 3DS update fixes a libretro issue that could freeze or crash RetroArch when leaving a game. The project says other Azahar variants are otherwise identical to 2126.1.1, so this is especially relevant to core users. Official release or project · Source code.

PCSX2 2.9.92: debugger cleanup

The PlayStation 2 emulator’s 2.9.92 development release fixes unsaved debugger breakpoints that were not removed when a saved breakpoint set was loaded. This is a narrow development-build change, not a new major stable version. Official release or project · Source code.

Ymir: Saturn accuracy work continues

The latest Ymir nightly reports an SH-2 address-alignment fix during pipeline refills alongside Direct3D 12 renderer maintenance. Several Ymir builds appeared this week; readers should use the project’s own releases and changelog to judge whether a nightly solves a particular game problem. Official release or project · Source code.

RPCS3: stability and file-path fixes

The September 28 PlayStation 3 development build includes a fix for a deadlock when a CPU thread ends abnormally and a correction to ISO device paths. It also relocates a blit-engine upscaling option into the advanced settings. Official release or project · Source code.

shadPS4: ongoing pre-release work

The PS4 emulator’s September 28 pre-release lists shader type compatibility work, a big-picture-mode launch fix for games without updates, and internal timing and stability changes. These are early builds, so compatibility remains game-specific. Official release or project · Source code.

Gearsystem 3.9.19: smoother sound

The Sega Master System and Game Gear emulator reports a fix for VSync-related audio underruns plus an updated controller database. These are practical improvements for people who already use the standalone application. Official release or project · Source code.

PPSSPP: an important file-cache correction

PPSSPP’s September 28 development build retains a partial final block when loading cached files. The change is small but relevant to correct file reads; users who prefer stable builds can stay with the project’s normal release channel. Official release or project · Source code.

Arcade and classic PC

FinalBurn Neo: archive and mapper changes

FinalBurn Neo’s September 28 build adds support for zstd-compressed ZIP entries, adjusts NES mapper 1 and 68 work-RAM access, and adds the Master Tennis homebrew entry for Master System. Several FB Neo nightlies appeared during the week; this is the newest notice in the feed. Official release or project · Source code.

DOSBox-X: Windows 95 audio and display work

DOSBox-X’s latest nightly clears a Windows Sound System DMA request when playback stops, adds a composite-mode configuration switch, and includes fixes to its configuration window and FPU handling. It is a development build; the project’s regular download page remains the better starting point for most users. Official release or project · Source code.

DOSBox Staging: text-mode rendering fixes

The September 27 staging build corrects horizontal pixel-panning direction in text mode and clarifies VGA draw-buffer handling. The change is especially relevant to people testing display accuracy in DOS software. Official release or project · Source code.

Collection tools and frontends

OxyROMon 0.24.0: the web UI grows up

OxyROMon’s release brings sorting, integrity checks, purging, and format conversion into its web UI, with additional import and patch workflows. This is one of the week’s most substantial usability updates for people maintaining large collections. Official release or project · Source code.

Igir 5.5.1: a careful raw-copy fix

Igir prevents automatic extension correction for archives copied without extraction or recompression. Its maintainer describes 5.5.1 mainly as a dependency update with this one functional fix, prompted by problems when combined with disc merging. Official release or project · Source code.

Xenia Manager 5.0: inspect games without leaving the app

Xenia Manager replaces its older “Open Game Location” action with an in-app, read-only explorer for a game container, including multi-disc navigation, search, and XEX metadata. It is a frontend for Xenia, not a new Xbox 360 emulator core. Official release or project · Source code.

sidplaywx 0.20.0: desktop controls for SID music

The Commodore 64 SID player adds Linux MPRIS controls for media keys and desktop widgets, plus new sound-emulation preferences including DAC leakage and DC-blocker resistance. Official release or project · Source code.

How this roundup is assembled

We use release notices to discover what changed, then check the highlighted items against the projects’ own releases, documentation, and source repositories. The dated log groups repeated builds by project. Verify the official project page before installing software; a nightly or pre-release may change quickly and compatibility varies by game and hardware.
